How much longer b4 Dwight becomes the offensive powerhouse..

Post#1 » by Pancho_Pantera » Sun May 11, 2008 12:07 am

..everyone expects him to be.

He's been in the league for four years, and he still hasn't mastered a go to move. Yes, he's already a beast in all other aspects of the game, and he's only 22, and he said he wants to be the best ever, but I'm just saying, four years in the league. The progress is evident every season but it's very slow.

He is very dominant with his athleticism.

Its scary to think how good he could be if he could develop a go to move in the post... and hit 75% of his FTs.

Right now he's still dominating with his size, power, and hops.

Howard needs to take time when this season is over and learn Basketball I. Q. right now he has the knowledge of a grade schooler when he doesn't get his way and when he acts like that he just doesn't hurt himself he hurts the entire team.

when he develops a finese move or two. tonight when he couldn't just overpower wallace he had nothing. he looked lost and frustrated on offense.

um, i think you're conflating temperament with knowledge, but i agree with the overall message just the same.

dwight does need to become a bit more patient and learn a few more things about playing center in this league.

He needs to keep taking that jumpshot. He can practice it all he wants but at some point you have to implement it in your repertoire come game time. What's he taken, about 10 all season long?

2 years is my guess as well. There is a lot he needs to learn about being an offensive post player. Can anyone even remember the last time he used a pump fake? How can you be a post player in this league and not ever use a pump fake.....its basketball 101. Even the Warlock used a pump fake the other night to get a dunk. Its not hard.....

Ya'know im gonna say next year. I think allot of our problems with Dwight are slowly gonna go away as time go's by. This year he improved his offensive game by leaps and bounds and is by far the BEST post player overall. He will get it straight sooner then we think.

He is close as it is, and on nights is unstoppable. Once he gains a little more consistency he will be as good offensively as Shaq was in his hay day. His hooks have looked better and better as this year has progressed, and his touch on his jump shots is pretty. I think that he will be there by next year, scoring 25+ a game. So says I.

How is he gonna be a powerhouse on O if he barely gets any touches.

Overall, yeah I agree. He needs to improve on a couple things, he's already improving albeit slightly on passing from double teams etc. FT shooting but he also needs to learn to take that jumpshot, just keep practicing eventually it'll improve. I think having Ewing helps out a lot. Maybe they could get in another big trainer/ex-HOF who can teach him a thing or two about fundamentals. If he can gain some moves on O he's going to be EXTREMELY SCARY.

I don't think he ever will be a powerhouse on the offensive end.

I think he'll be very good, and at times dominant, but never a powerhouse.

Hmm. Ok then, how do you define a "powerhouse"?

He's already a powerhouse imo. People are just allowed to push him sometimes, and he makes dumb mistakes. Dwight can't be stopped when people are passing into him after he establishes position. Everyone was passing into Dwight when he was moving or not paying attention and the Pistons players were pushing him everywhere. The refs would never let that happen to LeBron or Paul. Dwight gave up offensively after the 1st quarter. I agree, though, Dwight was HORRIBLE. They completely took him out of his game. There were some plays in particular that made me want to bang my head against something.

A player that can create offense and/or score at will.

In Howard's case, offensive instinct isn't there. He'll improve fundamentally and isn't at his peak yet.

Jabbar, Chamberlain, Shaq were powerhouse offensive players.

IF you can take a step back to the preseason you'll remember him trying out some different shots and moves. the problem I see with Dwight's situation is that it is hard to incorporate new offensive moves in your game when your team needs the production you are already used to to win.

New moves are not going to be as effective until they are broken in. thats one of the reasons that chasing a season win total isn't always good for a team. I'd love to see Dwight have games where he is encouraged not to dunk even if we lose the game. He really relies on it waaay too much.

He will be become a dominant offensive force if he puts the work in. He must get a better hook shot. IMO a great hook shot would easily put him at the 25ppg mark. A finese game is required. Increase his awarness and arsenal around the basket. However, I am starting to believe he must develop a jump shot. Maxiell is right about Howard having a weak base. This is why you see him off balance at times. Howard can dominate 90% of the league but there are several teams that just kill him (usually the physical teams). He can't model his game completely after Shaq. He doesn't have Shaqs base. Howard can be dominant without a jump shot but it is in his best interest to develop one.
