at the beginning of the season?

We all know hindsight is 20/20 but we're reflecting and looking back on the season, would you have let him play out the season and work out something this offseason or are you content with the extension?

He received an extension right before the season for roughly 32 million dollars over 5 years.

I am still happy with what happened. I think he really showed up in the playoffs an he is one fo them guys you jus love on your team.

I really like him as our PG. I think that next year he should get a lot more playing time, like closer to what the other guys get, 37min a game or there abouts. He is a good leader for this team, a good scorer, and good at getting the offense going.

Nelson can score the ball, its no secret, but he belongs coming off the bench being a boost where as Orlando needs a guy who is willing to pass the ball first, and get the other players in great scoring position. Nelson's positives pretty much don't fit this team.

5 apg is pretty good considering Hedo is our pg half the time.

Assists don't tell the whole story. There are some scary good offensive players around nelson. It's not so hard to throw oops to dwight all game, or watch lewis makes threes all over, or pass the ball to Hedo so he could get to the basket.

It's still too close to call. If he transfers this intensity into the next season he may make Hedo (or himself) trade bait.

I would have to say no, he isn't the answer to your PG problems so he isn't deserving of the extension (at least not that much). IMO, PG is the Magic's weakest position. They have nobody that can truly set the offense for them. Nelson is easily taken out of games by making him play defense. He's just too small. Yes, he' a good scorer. But he's not a legit PLAYOFF STARTING PG.

He got caught up in the air trying to make passes when his shot became contested by bigger and longer defenders. As someone else suggested, he would be a good sparkplug off the bench. Similar to the Ben Gordon role in Chicago. There are just too many deficiencies in his game to make him a starter and pay him starter money.

Still too early to tell but he earned a big chunk of this season's paycheck in that Toronto series.

I was one of the guys who said we should make Jameer play out the season before shelling out the cash.

yeah, he just looks for himself first. Nothing wrong with that, again, i just dont think his skills fit the team, as they dont need another scorer. A veteran PG would be nice ( Andre Miller), who knows the game real well, and gets others involved first.

i dont think he just looks for himself first... and he plays around thirty minutes a game right? 5 ast for thirty a game is solid (meer gets the hockey assists too... .) and like jredz said hedo is often the primary ball handler. He is a team leader too he motivates this team because hes always playing with a chip on his shoulder. He plays with great heart and determination and i think he fits in with this team great.

Yes. Extending him was the right thing to do as we would be going into next season with no contracted PGs on the roster. I think it would have been good to get him a bit cheaper, and thus more tradeable, but oh well.

He still leaves his feet too often and makes some careless turnovers, and also isn't aware of or fully in control of the flow of the game as a PG. But, he improved a lot this year and I think Stan got through to him. I also think he has major traction in the chemistry of this team, as does Hedo... which unfortunately puts complications on trading either of them.

I want him on the team but not for 8 million a year. Otis signs the right people he just tends to overpay them. Now if we could've gotten him for may 4 or 5 mil I would've been alright with that.

Um... His average salary in his extension will be 6.7mill per year... nowhere in the 5 years will he make 8mill.

I was reading the Sentinel today and I believe they said his contract is 5 years 40 million last time i checked 40/5 was 8. Unless the paper was wrong if so thats my fault and theres as well.

his heart greatly exceeds his talent ( thats not a good thing in the nba). He'd be an ideal 6-7th man. Also, i dont think he greatly improved this year, he was still inconsistent as Sin. He played a good stretch in the playoffs, but you can't just ignore what he did in 82 games ( losing his starting job). Your PG should be your most consistent player, not your least.

What this team needs more than anything is a pass first point guard who can really set guys like Lewis Hedo and Howard up. If we could get a strong young PG who won't get backed down all the time like a Ramon Sessions that would be great. I just don't know if they could find that PG right now. I think until we can find one like that the Magic are stuck with Nelson. I don't trust Smith. He can win my trust back this summer with a strong offseason but after giving Nelson and Lewis the contracts that he did it's hard for me to trust the guy.

I've seen it reported at $32.5mill and $35 mill but never as high as 40.

Hoopshype adds it up at $33.61mill, based on a 5.56mill starting salary in 2008-09 and standard raises.

FYI, the MLE in 2007-08 was 5.36mill. With standard raises over 5 years that would make a 5 year deal of $32.48mill.

The MLE for 2008-09 could easily be above 5.56million, making Jameer's extension possibly less than the MLE, at at worst, comparable to it.

Therefore, I have to say, I'm happy with Meer at the MLE price.

I see where you are coming from.
But first, look at the majority of championship teams from the past. A lot of their point guards were not the most consistent guys on the team nor the most talented. But a lot like Meer they were leaders, and determined. And a lot of his inconsistency during the regular season was due to injury. I know thats not necessarily a good excuse, but if he can stay healthy his plays an important role on this team as the team leader and he can score. And he didnt turn the ball over nearly as much as he did last year. I do believe the Nelson you saw in the playoffs is what we will see next year. He can score and pass (not the best passer but he gets the job done) and he can control the tempo.
