Here's an interesting article that mentions several SG/SFs that the Magic might look at this Summer. I think the Maggette trade is the most doable because he wants to come to Orlando and the trade works for both the Magic and the Clippers. The Clippers are lacking in just about every postion, and they like young players in cheap contracts. We could send them JJ/Evans (resigned)/or Bogans/ + cash/filler. We get a SG that can slash/shoot/defend, and we clear our logjam at the SG spot. The Clippers get several relatively good players on the cheap.

Sorry the free agents mentioned the Magic can't afford and you didn't read the entire article it was a rehash of what has been written over the season. It still says that the Magic keep Redick.

cougar, read the spirit of the article. This is post playoff, and the directive is coming from VDW. When the co-owner of the team recognizes he has holes to fill, it is logical to think he will empower his GM to take care of business. Of course, the Magic can't afford these guys straight up. That's where Otis figures out how to do a sign and trade.

I've got a feeling we'll get quite a bit of interest from players who we would normally before since we had such a great season, our future is very promising and (clears throat) Superman Dwight Howard.

IMO the real question is whether ownership is on board financially to make upgrades. Previously Magic ownership has said they will not commit to 3 max contracts. If they are willing to pay a 3rd player a good salary (albeit short of the max), we could see real improvement.

And let's not forget that we are not as salary cap bound as some think. Teams committed to getting players have been known to do creative salary dumps. We've done it at least twice in the past to get rid of Francis and when we were trying to sign Hill and McGrady. One scenario that could play out would be to trade a heady vet like Battie for a draft pick. That clears cap space and, he didn't see the floor last year. Hopefully that would come in conjunction with us locking up Vazquez or picking up another big.

I'd love either Maggette or Peitrus, Mags preffered because of his offensive abilities. Both guys are big and strong, and not likely to get run over by opposing 2 guards. I like both Bogans and Evans but feel both are better for the bench. Now do we have a real shot at either? I hope so. We need some upgrades there.

I think I may just like this Bob Vander Weide character. I really like owners that go out and try to win, not just make a profit. If he does a mini-Mark Cuban act, than that is great for us fans.

If GM Smith could pull off a trade of Redick and Evans for Maggette, without touching one red cent of the MLE, then he will look very, very good for votes for the GM award of the year.

Let's say this happens, the Magic let Augustine and Garrity go, Foyle opts, Dooling is resigned, and Vazquez is brought over, before the Magic go shopping for FAs, or draft a 1st rounder, the roster would already be:

Nelson, Dooling
Maggette, Bogans
Turkoglu
Lewis, Cook, Gortat
Howard, Battie, Vazquez

The MLE in this case could be split to two FAs to support wing depth. BPA would be drafted, and that's a 14 man roster.

I like that lineup. If Turk stays I would have the roster you put out there, but in slightly different positions.

You know dr, that's a decent line of thinking, I still have concerns about our power forward situation, but...what if Gortat really does have a future. The guy showed some signs late in the year. We don't need a double double from the guy, but if he could scratch his way to 8 and 8 for us he'd be starting quality in my view. As for Vazquez, I'm not putting any stock in his basket till he becomes part of the roster. As for the 2 guard thing, something has to be done, and I think logically Redick should be moved. He's got no future here, his future lies with a team that has no intention of playing defense.

If that trade and lineup you mentioned works out, then our biggest need is a true PG as backup. Dooling should be the 3rd PG string at best. He's more effective at the 2.

Gortat is not an 8 and 8 player. I like him but I seriously doubt he could be a candidate for that kind of production.

its too early to say anything about Gortat.

It just looks unrealistic for me that Clips would accept this package from us. Other teams would offer much better deals for Corey imo.
We could be a part of a large deal:

Clips get:
J. Oneal, Dunleavy, 2nd rd pick from Pacers

Pacers get: Brand, Turkoglu

Magic get: Magette

The only thing that i can say about Gortat is that we have our backup center. Gortat is good for 10 mpg. We will have to see about the production but he has a good attitude and practices against the best center in the league so he will be alright against backup centers.

Really, dude? Battie third on the depth chart at center, and Vazquez and Cook at PF? Lewis and Turk at SF? Do you watch basketball?

Yes, I watch every Magic game, and have followed Vazquez as best as possible on the web. Help me out here. Battie subs at both PF and C, but Gortat has proven himself in Summer League and coach SVG gushes about his improvement and dedication. He is more mobile than Battie, and capable of playing in SVGs system, so why shouldn't he be 2nd on the depth chart?
Lewis' natural position is SF, and that's where the Magic brought him in. To the best of my knowledge it was only when Battie went down that Lewis was moved to PF. Turk is best suited to be a SF, and if we keep him with the proposed group he would add depth to the 2nd unit. Vazquez is a skilled PF and Cook is a scoring PF. So what's your real issue?

An NBA starting PF?

Battie will be the first big at either PF or C. Cook and Gortat will be situational players and Vazquez will be playing in Spain or the D-league.

This is for the current roster, of course. Who knows what it may look like come next season.
