Calderon unhappy in Raptorland

Post#1 » by macdalejax » Sat May 17, 2008 6:00 pm

http://torontosun.com/Sports/Basketball/2008/05/16/5584746-sun.html

Each time Jose Calderon opens his mouth or uses his personal website as a platform to vent, he inadvertently is fuelling a controversy that is headed for one ugly climax.

Most NBA observers figured the Raptors' chances of keeping both Calderon and T.J. Ford were minimal at best.

As the team's off-season continues, the chances grow even slimmer, the possibility of a trade more likely as the chasm between Ford and Calderon widens.

At this point, all Calderon can do is wait until July 1, when NBA free agency kicks in.

In his case, Calderon becomes a restricted free agent and the Raptors have steadfastly stated they will match any offer.

With so few teams having cap space, the most Calderon can expect is a mid-level offer, which is expected to be in the neighbourhood of $5.6 million US, doubling his stipend from last season.

Sign-and-trade scenarios are possible and teams conceivably can clear space, factors that could lead to a more lucrative offer for Calderon.

But the fact remains that one of Calderon or Ford must go.

There is no market for Ford, while teams privately covet Calderon, who would make both a playing and cultural fit in markets such as Miami and Los Angeles.

Not that the Raptors needed further evidence of the growing divide at the point, but quotes attributed to Calderon highlight a rift with Ford.

"I would like to start and that's the most important thing,'' Calderon is quoted as saying in yesterday's edition of the Spanish daily sports newspaper El Mundo Deportivo, a sentiment he first shared with visitors to his website.

But now comes the kicker.

Continued Calderon in the article: "I've been two years with him but I don't know if I could be another year because things would have to change."

Barring a complete personality makeover by Ford, which doesn't seem likely, nothing can change in Raptorland.

That is why a change in scenery for Calderon is best for all parties concerned.

People have been clamouring for a player such as Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers, an athletic wing who is capable of averaging 20 a night and attacking the rim.

The Clippers can use a point guard and Calderon's family probably wouldn't object to southern California's warm climate.

It's just one of many possibilities to ponder as July 1 approaches and as the Raptors try to solve their mess at the point position.

it would be awesome if we could get him...clutch player and a great pass first PG...jameer would be coming off the bench but that's where he's suited best anyways

Not changing this sig until Magic win a championship. Started 6/26/2015.

If we pulled off getting Calderon I could forgive Otis for his past sins. That would be amazing.

Honestly, considering the contract Nelson was given, and the fact that he performed well in the postseason, I just don't see Otis actively pursuing Calderon.

He would be an upgrade over Nelson, though. Still, I like Nelson and believe he receives too much criticism. He improved his stats in most categories this season, except for scoring (which is what we originally wanted; limit the shooting and focus more on passing). In theory, he should only continue to improve next season.

No thanks. We have other needs, like finding a sg. Getting a pg to start in place of Nelson would be a step sideways.

Then trade Nelson if thats what it takes simply swap them. Calderon is a far superior PG to Nelson. Getting him would be perfect for our offense. I think if we got him we could actually afford to get rid of Hedo and bring some other people. Cause even though Hedo was gone we would still have a really good distributor running the offense who could make plays for other people on the team, and he doesn't turn the ball over.

We need a big 2 and a backup pf more than we need a pg. Calderon's defense is worse than Jameer's.

Wouldnt we just be adopting Toronto's two quality PG dilemma? Aren't Jameer and TJ pretty similar in what they do?

Hate to the the party pooper, but this only works if we ship out Jameer and thats not happening, so you can put this one to bed.

JJ + Nelson for Calderon

Pg- Calderon
Sg- Bogans
Sf- Hedo
Pf - Lewis
C- Howard

And who knows, maybe we can get a solid big man so we can Lewis to SF. But I doubt we'll get Calderon.

Getting the ball into Dwight was one of our biggest problems all year long and especially against Detroit. Let's say Dwight does develop his post game over the next year or so...who is going to to deliver the pass to him? Jameer will need to significantly improve that ability, or we make Hedo and Shard do it, or we find a PG who already demonstrates that ability and do something else with Meer. Personally, I think Jameer is a starting caliber PG but Calderon is just a better PG and a better fit for us. Jameer and/or Hedo could be used to acquire a suitable 2 and a big along with Calderon via trade....that would involve a third team or just 2 separate trades.

Imagine Calderon setting up our offense and getting ball to Dwight at will. That would help our offense tremendously. Then again we did have a top 5 offense in the league this year.... Ahh, choices...choices :)

I've been a huge Calderon fan since he came into this league, but I don't know if the Magic should go after him.

Calderon might be an upgrade on offense over Nelson but he's a worse defender than him. And we really need a tall defensive PG. As we could see in the series against Toronto, any of our PGs could easilly blast past Calderon when they decided to attack the rim.

Van Gundy will make Calderon better defensively. That's what he does.

And Howard needs to STFU and develop his offense a lot faster.

calderon don't play no defense, something we kill jameer for. I prefer Jameer starting and Calderon isn't happy because he doesn't start.
We have more important needs.

Whatever it takes, then move the" hamster" to the bench, which will bring instant offense, and turnovers too, lol

the title of this thread is misleading.

the OP says "Raptorland" when he really means "Craptorland".
