Some valuable expirings on our roster....(2010 offseason)

Post#1 » by Dwightmare » Fri May 23, 2008 9:07 pm

I just realized that...

Battie 7M
JJ 3M
and possibly Cook 3M if he picks up his player option
Total 13M

will all expire in time for the Lebron, Wade, and Bosh off season. We probably wont be players for those guys, but these will be very valuable expirings. Maybe it is in our best interest to hold on to these guys until that trade deadline. They might be able to net us some serious talent.

I could be wrong but I don't think we're going to be very far under the cap anyways with Dwight and Rashard's contracts kicking in. If we re-sign Turk that year there probably won't be any chance.

Agreed, no chance. But there is definitely going to be some GMs hard at work trying to cut salary any way possible and expirings are going to be more valuable than usual.

Might be another reason that Otis wants to keep JJ around.

Our expirings would only be valuable if we were willing to take on another contract. If we aren't willing to do that then nobody would trade for our expirings.

Well, according to HoopsHype we will have only the three of Nelson/Lewis/Howard on the books totaling $39 mil. If the cap is $60 mil that is a good $21 mil to play with.

Now, this would mean we don't use the MLE either this year or next, don't sign any rookies long term, don't re-sign Turk, don't really make any long term commitments till then. We would have the expirings of Hedo/Battie/Cook/Redick to trade the summer of 09. If Otis is really crazy, he may be able to do something....

P.s. I bet that if we are that low we could net a talent like Bosh, who gets along famously with Howard and would be the perfect compliment to Dwight's game. Then we'd have a front court of Howard/Bosh/Lewis! :o

I doubt Otis does any thing with that. Hell the Magic should have got Gasol this season. I would have gladly given up Arroyo, Garrity, Dooling, Bogans and 2 future 1st rounders for the guy. Adding him would have insured Nelson, Howard, Lewis and Gasol under contract for a while. We could have moved Hedo to SG and signed a guy like Childress, who can play multiple positions to the MLE. Use the VE on Williams and draft a PG with the 22nd overall pick. Re-sign Evans for cheap.

2008-2009 Magic:

PG Nelson, Williams, Rookie
SG Hedo, Evans, Reddick
SF Lewis, Childress
PF Gasol, Cook, Fran
C Howard, Battie, Gortat

LBJ will resign with Cleveland or go to Hollywood or Broadway, not the Magic Kingdom. Miami is on the verge of rebuilding and Wade will resign. Bosh is interesting. That team needs to win-now, or Bosh bolts. The tax bases alone would move Bosh from Canada to Florida. Plus, in three years, wouldn't Bosh get tired of playing for an underachiever team; was nothing learned from KG's wasted years in Minny???

The Cavs are going to have pretty much the same team for the next few years. The Heat are actually in pretty good shape cap wise if they don't spend a lot in the next few years. The Magic are in the same boat. They could gain a few rookies, sign one MLE player and still have around 15 to 17 million to spend in the summer of 2010, while also still having Howard, Nelson and Lewis on the roster.

This is one of the reasons why the Magic should look into trading Hedo for some prospects. It would give us some guys that have lower salaries and could be paired with expiring contracts to get Bosh because he tells Toronto that he will bolt at the end of his contract.

I don't know. I see Bosh demanding a Max contract. I don't see us being able to support another one of those within the next 6 years. We still have to surround these guys with other players. We can't just surround a couple superstars with scrubs and hope for the best.

We will not be players for any of those major FA's. Verrrry unlikely (only if we trade Shard and thats not happening).

What I meant with my original post is that we will have almost 13M in expirings which will be attractive to teams that are trying to cut salary in order to make a play for those guys. Kind of like when we traded Maggette away for expirings in order to clear cap for McGrady/Hill.
