Fines For Flopping!!! Praise the Lord!!!

Post#1 » by LBPTarHeel27 » Thu May 29, 2008 12:55 pm

The NBA announced to its teams this week at its annual pre-draft camp that fines will be imposed on players starting next season for clear cases of "flopping," ESPN.com has learned.

The league office has yet to determine exact fine amounts for offending flops and how fines might escalate for repeat offenders, but in-game arena observers and video reviewers will be instructed to report instances of theatrical flopping for potential punishment as part of postgame reports on officiating and other matters.

It is about damn time. This has to help Dwight more than any other player.

There goes Toronto's gameplan...jk. I agree it's about time. My only concern is are the fines going to help fix the problem in crunch time. Players and organizations make plenty of money to pay fines. If it's playoff time, will they care how much it may or may not cost them? My guess is the somebody is going to review questionable plays after the game. I dunno. :dontknow:

It is not going to help much while a game is going on. Guys can and will still flop. But this just makes them all think twice about it and have to decide if its really worth it. By that time, Dwight SHOULD have dunked on them.

good old Rasheed

"All that bull(bleep)-ass calls they had out there. With Mike [Callahan] and Kenny [Mauer] -- you've all seen that (bleep)," Wallace said. "You saw them calls. The cats are flopping all over the floor and they're calling that (bleep). That (bleep) ain't basketball out there. It's all (bleeping) entertainment. You all should know that (bleep). It's all (bleeping) entertainment."

This will help our team because we get screwed many times by floppers, specially Dwight with the offensive fouls. Who can forget Amare jumping back when Dwight slightly nudged him almost killing Steve Nash? It also wont affect us in a negative way because we dont really have floppers on our team anyway. The only one that can really be called a flopper is Arroyo and he might not be back next year.

Let us all hope and pray Carlos Arroyo is playing somewhere else next season. As for the floppers, it looks like Vlade Divac retired just in time. That guy was a hall of fame flopper.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

I like it very much, actually got very excited after reading that the league actually going to do something about it. I would have prefered a foul call against them than a cash fine.

Whom do you think will cough up most money next year. My guess is Varejao.

Sorry, I don't see how this would work. A player flops, the ref calls a foul, the other team challenges. After the game, the NBA reviews the tapes and decides there was a flop. Do they change the score, deducting the FTs? I would not expect so. They fine the flopper, who doesn't care, because for sure someone will slip him the money. More likely, they look at the tapes and decide they could not determine whether or not there really was contact and so accept the ref's decision.

If they really wanted to stop flopping, they would inform the refs that they could not call a foul unless they saw the contact involved. If they determined that it was a flop, the ref would be fined. Refs would quickly learn not to call a foul based on the reaction of the "fouled" player, and flopping would go away.

As far as I can tell, it won't matter what the ref called during the game. Its kind of like the flagrant foul review system.

However, with refs aware that the NBA is going after flops, and with in game observers and post game review, I can't imagine those factors don't influence refs to be a little more hesitant to reward flops with offensive foul calls.

Also, this will impact the flops where no foul is called either way, which I think is a positive thing for game play.

 FINALLY .... I really think this will help a lot. This league is full of egos and to be called a flopper in a game is nothing but to be "labeled" and fined as a flopper will be devistating to some players. After two or three fines and an episode on ROME IS BURNING and a few ESPN skits about how much of a pu$$ some players are ... well I think it will clean up pretty quick.

Next they need to fix the blocking foul caused by the offensive player initiating contact and acting like they were shot with buck shot. (Wade)

Actually, let me put Chris Bosh in at F, bump Vlade to C and move Haywood to the bench. Haywood isn't talented enough to start on any team, even this one.
