Grant Hill may have been the biggest reason Doc failed here, but not the only one. With Hill's massive contract tying up much of the salary cap, Doc and former GM John Gabriel needed to work together and work miracles in the draft. Instead, they became engaged in a power struggle.

Gabriel rightfully gets blamed for some poor draft picks, but Magic insiders will tell you Doc was just as responsible and pushed for such first-round busts as Jeryl Sasser and Steven Hunter. And although Doc refutes it, former Magic exec John Weisbrod said Doc made one of the most monumental miscalculations in Magic history.

"When given the choice between [keeping] Ben Wallace or John Amaechi, Doc chose John Amaechi," Weisbrod said. "Most every personnel decision that was made was because Doc was in favor of it."

Eh its the past i could care less... Good read though.. But I dont even care to hear about the magic until draft night now. With everyones dumb trade request and wishing certain players where here, and everyone arguing this is the worst part of the season.

I never expected Wallace to become a DPOY and the anchor of a championship team's defense, but I remember being surprised and also disappointed when we (well, Rivers) chose Amaechi over Wallace.

Wallace was fun to root for during his one and only Magic season. He was my favorite "new Magic player" during his short stint, and I loved when he would enter a game with that big afro of his, because he'd always grab a few rebounds and throw down a cool dunk or two (better hops back then).

The Sentinel even did a piece on him and his wife (or girlfriend) and made it the main front page story of the sports section at one point. Wallace was the man.

That ticked me off when we included him in the Grant Hill deal. :nonono:

Ultimatly it lead to the drafting of Dwight so light at the end of the tunnel and all that.

It sure is. But with Doc in the finals, some are looking at him like he's a genius, which is obviously not the case. Not necessarily around here mind you, we all should already know the deal.

Scholarly, is that Raistlin in your avatar? If so, kudos.

The Amechi over Wallace thing reminds me of Penny pushing for the Magic to sign Ike Austin over Scot Pollard. It's hard to remember now, but that turned out to be a huge mistake.

GM's should be allowed to be GM's.

I like SVG's approach. "Here otis, get me height, strength, and hustle on draft night."

Kudos to you for knowing it!

I wasn't sure anyone would know that one...

I found the exact size perusing a search engine. Isn't the internet wonderful?
