Why Magic Didn't Buy 2nd Rounder (Denton)

Post#1 » by DiplomaticMagic » Sun Jun 29, 2008 8:35 pm

ORLANDO -- I was told by someone in the Magic's war room that the cost was deemed too high to buy a second round pick in Thursday's NBA Draft.

Teams wanted $200,000 to buy into the top half of the second round and $150,000 for a late second-round selection.

When Indiana's D.J. White and Memphis' Joey Dorsey went off the board, the Magic abandoned any thoughts of buying a second round pick. Those two players were high on the Magic's board because of their muscular frames are both NBA ready.

And apparently the Magic had little interest in adding another small point guard in Mario Chalmers, who surprisingly fell into the second round after being projected to go in the teens of the first round.

Mark Cuban is quoting significantly different figures for the upper portion of the 2nd round. And he claims he turned down 500k for pick 51. Draw your own conclusions, I guess.

Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban said that his team had opportunities to move up in Thursday's draft but declined because of the steep price that some teams were placing on their assets, the Dallas Morning News is reporting.

"One of the teams drafting very high in the second round called and told us we could have their pick for $2 million and a second-rounder," Cuban said Saturday.

"It was outrageous. A team offered us half-a-million for [pick] 51, and we turned it down. People were asking, 'Why aren't you buying up?' We turned down half-a-million because we really, really like Shan."

The Mavericks selected Shan Foster with the 51st pick.

According to Cuban - 500k for #51.

D.J. White ended up a first rounder. And Joey Dorsey was the third 2nd rounder taken. THe window for these guys was small.

According to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress the Heat paid 1.5 mil for Chalmers. So while there may have been picks going in the top half for 200k, that was probably AFTER the big players left were taken.

we aren't allowed to quote additional amounts from alternate sources outside of John Denton, especially if the word "reported" is anyone remotely near the sited source...picks in the 2nd round we're only going for $150k-200k...and Otis is straight up (Please Use More Appropriate Word) for not buying a pick, no matter the cost...period
