O-Sen: Maggette Move Unlikely

Post#1 » by drsd » Mon Jun 30, 2008 6:25 am

Los Angeles Clippers guard Corey Maggette told friends over the weekend that he was encouraging the Orlando Magic to make a competitive offer in free agency, allowing him to return to the team where he started his NBA career nine years ago.

"I think he'd come back in a heartbeat," said a Maggette friend who is close to both the player and the Magic organization. "It's something he'd love to see happen."

Maggette played here as a rookie (1999-00). His parents live in Central Florida. He has often spoken about the possibility of returning to the Magic.

That would be fantastic! Corey Maggette was one of my favourite players for the one year he was here. He adds that slasher to our line-up, which is one thing I think the team needs to get us over the top. A guy who can consistently get to the line when the jumpshots aren't falling.

he knows all we can offer is the MLE unless we go for a S+T, but i don't think the Clips will want an assortment of Bogans + Cook + JJ.

i wonder if he's seriously considering the MLE? that'd be great!

Where in there does it say we want to sign him? The clippers would rather let him walk than trade him for any of the garbage that has been mentioned in this thread, even a late 1st round pick is essentially nothing more than cash now.

He would be an awesome fit here, and I think he could help bring us a championship, but unless he decides to take the MLE to come here, i dont think its realistic.

Well if he does just walk and the clippers dont trade him then he will almost be forced to take the MLE since there are not many teams with money this year and there are much more valuable people who could test free agency.

Livingston is an unrestricted free-agent and does not need to be included in a SnT (and I don't even know if it's allowed to add two SnTs into one end of a swap). So, focussing on the Magic side for Maggette.

Last year:
Bogans made 2.4
Redick made 2.0
Cook made 3.5

This year, those three will bank 8.5-9M. That is more than enough to sign Maggette, and is the kind of deal that would be required. Bogans and Cook alone might come to 6.5M, and that's probably not enough for Maggette to ink a contract. But for the Magic, that would be an ideal offer.

Bogans is a key to this proposal as the Clippers will need a SG/SF combo wing to bolster their roster.

2. Corey Maggette, Clippers: Maggette has been on the trading block for years and appears eager to bolt the Clippers. He's making $7 million next season and should be due a raise.

Teams will be out in force trying to get him, but most will have only the midlevel exception to offer -- which would mean he'd be taking a pay cut. A sign-and-trade is the most likely option, with the Phoenix Suns looking like the team most interested in him. They could offer a swap of Leandro Barbosa that may interest L.A.
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Wonder if Stan could teach him to pass the ball every now and then.

Read that story carefully.

The headline throws you off track. The story doesn't actually say that the Magic intend to try to sign him. It says Corey has been telling people to tell them to encourage them to make a "competitive'' bid to sign him. Note that "competitive'' part, too. That definitely means he has no intention of signing for the MLE. The Magic would have to come up with a deal that the Clippers would want. I'm guessing that would mean Hedo, but that's just a guess.

Was about to say - its not about the Magic wanting Mag's but Mag's "wanting" the Magic.

Nothing in the article about the Magic organisation side.

This sounds like he is expecting the Magic to make their best offer to him, which is the full MLE. Getting him for that would be absolutely amazing , and would surely assure Otis his place in heaven.

No, there isn't anything in there about Otis knocking on his door at midnight, but it is the most important aspect that we have been looking for, that Maggette wants to come back. A lot of people brought that up again and again here, that we weren't even sure that Corey wanted to return. I think its great news, and the Clips are so cheap that they are probably only looking to give him a 40M contract themselves. They can trade him sure, but it doesn't look like LA wants big contracts coming back. Brand is their big money guy, and they don't usually want to have multiple ones. That team seems like its always on the youth movement track. I can see them taking cheap contracts back to fill out their roster as they groom their youngsters into the starting lineup. Also, it sounds to me that the full mle might be considered as a "competitive" offer, but he knows as we do that we still need to make room for him too, so a sign and trade with our backup sg's included seems logical. And if he forces the issue, we won't have to include Hedo in a deal. Just like we had to take what Houston was willing to give when we traded Tmac, the Clips would have to do the same to some extent or let him walk for nothing. Bogans/JJ/Cook/and a future first for a resigned Maggette and Livingston would be sweet as can be though.
