1st time otis talked about jameer's size

General manager Otis Smith acknowledged last week that point guard was a position of concern, especially because the 6-foot Nelson has defensive troubles at times with bigger guards. Duhon, an elite defender and a solid 3-point shooter, could give the Magic some defensive grit at point guard.

"You have a small point guard like we have, you have to cover yourself with someone with size," Smith said.

Elite defender? Let's not get carried away.
11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.

- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.

If Otis was so worried about Jameer's size why did he give him a 5/$35 million deal? I don't think that Jameer would have gotten a deal close to this amount from any other team in the league. Not to mention a signing of Duhon basically puts the White flag up on trying to get Magette.

This doesn't make sense because Turk is the main ball-handler when he is out there. If Lee can come into the Summer League and do well at the PG spot then he might be a viable option to get some minutes at the PG spot.

Why wouldn't the Magic make the logical move and try and sign Dooling and leave open the option of getting Maggette as well? They can't tell me about the Luxury tax. It is not the fans fault that the organization drastically overpaid for Jameer & Rashard.

Hardly elite, and hardly of size.

A small improvement over Arroyo, but this hardly makes the Magic one step better.

I don't know what Otis is smoking, but I'd like to have some of that.

Good point, this is the first time I hear him talk about Jameer height. Now we all know Jameer is 5'10 1/2, so Duhon is taller at 6'1. But I have not seen enough of Duhon to call him an Elite Defender. You guys may know better if he truly is which he doesn't sound like one by what Im reading.

believe it or not guys, big pg =/= elite defender. Hey may be small, but he's definitely solid on the defensive end. With that being said, I don't think their is an elite defensive pg in the league today. I'd say Duhon is top 10 in defense, and he's fundamentally sound on offense, just a below average shooter, but better than anyone else we have at distributing. I'd say it's a solid addition if signs.

you guys kill me. you woof all year that we need to upgrade the pg position, duhon is the best & only option available and you complain. do you guys even realize what a gm's job is? its not only to sign & trade players but he also has to be a politician which means he has to schmooze & say the things necessary to entice a player to want to sign here. ironically enough, the knicks are also trying to sign him to a 2 year $10mil deal & offering him a chance to start.

dunno much about duhon, but i do know that he's 6'1 with a 6'6 wingspan.

for reference, jameer is 6'0 with a 6'2 wingspan.

if duhon is aggressive enough to pick guys up full-court and stay in front of bigger PGs then i'll gladly take him as a backup over arroyo.

i'm not expecting him to be a better defender than dooling, though.

from what I've seen and heard since Duhon came into the league, he's been considered one of the better defensive PGs. I'd say his defense is probably equal, if not better than Dooling's. And he's a better 3-point shooter, a better passer, and he takes care of the ball.

And yea, the wingspan makes a huge difference. Then again, I think Dooling has like a 6-8 wingspan though. Hopefully we can keep both and throw them out together on defensive assignments to full court press.

FWIW some comparisons between dooling/duhon

For those saying that Duhon is the only answer, you are wrong. There are plenty of available PG's.

For those saying that Duhon is only a small upgrade over Arroyo, you are wrong. Arroyo did nothing positive for this team. He did what any PG in the league should be capable of doing...he just kinda kept up with the competition. He never did anything to truly help the team play well.

Duhon can do that. Duhon is a floor leader, something even Jameer is not. Duhon will have a huge impact on the consistancy at that position if we are able to land him.

Not true.

I am no fan of Arroyo by any means, but he did have his offensive moments. What was bad about Arroyo was his inconsistency and lack of athleticism defensively.

To say he did nothing to help the team is wrong.

When in need of an offensive punch, at times Arroyo could deliver. I don't think that is is the cards with Duhon.

I like the pick up of Duhon, and am glad that the Arroyo experiment seems to be over, but give the guy some credit......

Arroyo had his moments, but for the most part he was too selfish, and not a good enough defender. He has the skills to be a first rate PG in this league. His creativity and ability is top notch. Unfortunately he's a shoot-first player (probably influenced from his experiences with the PR team), and often he tries to create instead of pass or takes a shot when he shouldn't.

He had his moments, but Duhon is a HUGE improvement over him IMO. Duhon is a top notch backup, if not a solid starter.

While Duhon os listed at 6'1" he has very long arms for a man that size. He is a much better defender than Nelson. He may not be the defender that Dooling is but he's a much better PG.
