Otis says Maggette is a Long Shot

Orlando Magic General Manager Otis Smith said Monday that the club is interested in signing free agent Corey Maggette, but concedes they're a darkhorse in the race.
"Is it a long shot?" Smith said. "Uh, yeah."
Smith said he originally wanted to split the midlevel exception. Then, Baron Davis opted out of his deal with the Golden State Warriors that started a chain reaction. Davis apparently has agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, which set Maggette free and made him available.
Smith said the Magic still want to bring back combo guard Keyon Dooling. Dooling said the Magic have yet to offer him a contract.The Magic just lost point guard Chris Duhon, who has agreed to sign with the New York Knicks."Chris, he has a chance to start,Smith said. "That was important to him."

As long as Otis is taking a good swing at it I won't fault him for not getting Maggette. Seems like Maggette's reported desire to come back to Orlando was a little overstated if things go the way they seem to be.

Hey, this is the first time that it's been officialy confirmed that we are interested in bringing him back. I actually excited over this news. It's possible. Speculations by BS, Povtak and Denton are meaningless to me. But qoutes from Otis makes it official. Now it all depends on Corey. Otis don'tlet him get away.

Can't fault him but if Maggette signs with San Antonio for the MLE I will wonder how good his selling skills are. I mean here he is guaranteed more minutes(doesn't have to split time with Ginobli) and his family is here and he is familiar with the area/Organization.
I understand when players take less to win a ring but I'm not sure he is the missing piece for SA plus they are only getting older whereas we are a young and upcoming team (and I do think he can be the missing piece here/fits better). Maybe I'm just biased

I would think if he went to San Antonio they would play him a lot at SF so he wouldn't have to lose time to Ginobili. IMO he would have a lot bigger role there than he would here.

i think he might be listed as sg in the starting line-up, but he would essentially be the starting sf because of bowens game. it doesnt matter what you list bowen as, hes going to be guarding the same player regardless.

Wouldnt it be a bit embarassing playing for a team with a max contract player on it the same position as you are making 3x the money you are about to make. Consider this fact Magette and Lewis are about the same player with equal talents with Lewis having a useless 3 inches over Mags, does that recitfy Lewis gargantuan salary, he got lucky that is all. Magette could've had close to what Lewis had if his contract was up as the same time last year. I think hes insulted by the Magic offer, due to the fact that he beleives that he is equally talented player in comparison to Rashard Lewis, there is no chance in hell he signs with the Magic, he would rather be a big dog somewhere else. I think the only way the Magic can get Magtte is through a sign and trade option, in which they have to overpay(or in comparison to Lewis, underpay) for his services, starting salary of over 10 mil minimum.

Well Maggs is a SF. He really doesn't have to split time with him.

Yeah its funny. If Maggette was a free agent last year and Rashard was a free agent right now its possible that Lewis would be taking MLE offers and Maggette would be the most overpaid player in the league. Even if Lewis was able to get something more than the MLE no way Golden State and Phili give him the max.I wonder if Maggette and Lewis were both free agents who the Magic would have chosen.

No reason for him to be insulted. It's not like the Magic have any other options. They don't have any cap space. I guess if he's going to be insulted, he will be insulted by any offers from anyone but the Sixers and Warriors. Or the Clippers if Brand ends up going someplace else. It's not like you can sit around wondering what players might do in future years.

I think they would want to run him at shooting guard to give more of a thrasher and scorer in the starting line up. Plus, great post laVal this is an organization that is only one starter and a couple of bench players away from a championship. I just find it funny that there were all these rumors not even a couple of months ago saying that Maggette was hoping the Magic would make a competitive offer and him saying to friends that he wants to return to Orlando. Who are these so called associates? As far as I'm concern Orlando is putting just as much on the table for C-Mag as any team in the league besides GS and Philly.

I can think of at least two other reasons to sign with the MAGIC and not the Spurs. With the MAGIC you are playing next to probably the most recognized player in the league in Dwight. He is the new face of the league and Maggs would get exposure just by being on the team. This alone could increase his ability to get indorsement $$$$. In San Antonio, Maggs would be somewhere behind Eva Longoria in popularity and exposure. Second, the Spurs have to navigate through Phoenix, Dallas, NO, LA and Portland is not going to be a cake walk. In the East, the road to the Finals is not easy but is not like the West.

I'm as big a Lewis critic as there is, but lets not get crazy. Neither should be a max player, but Lewis should be making much more than a Magette. Rashard wouldn't even consider a MLE. He's been an allstar. The closest Magette has ever been was the dunk contest.
