OT: anyone in the armed forces? (specifically Air Force)

I'm thinking of joining the Air Force. In fact, i'm going to stop by a recruiting office tomorrow after work and get some information and sit down and talk to someone about it.

I was just wondering if anyone here has served, or is still in the armed forces (specifically Air Force would be great) and could tell me what to expect, what I need to do, etc. I can't recall hearing very many people complain about their time in the military, they usually rave about it and never regret it.

What kind of experiences can I expect? What's the best/worst things about serving? Things like that would be great in helping my decision.

ya i served in the air force as well as my father and brother, who are both still in. no real complaints, moving around a lot can be a hassle but you get to see the world. i took them up on a free education as well, probably the best perk of the job. just know it is work, whether you're in the army in Iraq or in the Air Force in Korea you have a purpose and it hits home quick. good luck and props to you. serving isn't for everyone.

I havent served or anything, and I have alot of respect and appreciation for those who do, but I would imagine spending year long tours of duty in Iraq or Afganistan would kind of suck.

i'm serving but for army, all i can tell you is that make sure that this is something you want to do, and try to find out as much about your MOS as possible, don't trust the recruiter, try to get as much benefit out of it as possible while signing up for the shortest time, you can always reenlist if you think air force is for you, but it's hard to get out if it's not.

Nice job doing this after you'll be graduating.

I don't know, but a lot of the questions you posed seem to be pretty obvious. Especially the "worst" part of serving, probably being having a friend die and/or dieing yourself.

Will your degree afford you an opportunity to get a decent position? I've had family members with college degrees / training in certain areas jump in and be ranked pretty highly while never seeing a minute of actual battle. In that case, the only thing that sucks is them moving around.

I very much respect your decision and every one in the services. It takes a special person to commit to this. But I must say, I am very unhappy about our government taking care of our service men and women after duty. Most friends I know have some sort of PTS which has effected their personal lives and family. Shor temperment and anger is the most common side effects. Unfortunately they are not getting much help from the gov either. So Talk to as many people as you can and get them to open up to you and tell you like it really is.

Anything you decide, I wish you the best. You are a very brave man.
