So Anthony Johnson replaces Keyon

Post#1 » by glennathan » Thu Jul 17, 2008 5:34 pm

I know you are probably thinking we already know this but I just noticed that they are about the same build (6'3" 190 lbs.) and Anthony Johnson's number is 5. (Keyon's Old number)

I guess it is out with the old and in with the.....

Well Old I guess.

Anyways I will admit that Anthony Johnson is an upgrade to what keyon was so hopefully we will pull out about 57 wins or more.

AJ has some traits that are better than Dooings, but also lacks some of what Dooling brought every night.

AJ is a nice role player that will fill a "caretaker" role. Whether or not he provides enough production should he become the primary back up PG remains to be seen. Personally, I don't think he can carry that load.

More depth is needed.

We'll regret letting Keyon walk. Do we have a spark type player on the bench anymore? The answer would be no. Unless Lee turns out to be that guy out of nowhere.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

I know you are a huge Dooling fan, but I think Courtney Lee is gonna surprise a lot of people.

I think Otis likes Dooling, but money wise keeping him was not feasible. He was asking for more than the Magic were willing to pay.

AJ will bring defense that we lose when letting Dooling go but he doesn't bring the energy Keyon brings. What AJ brings however is a true PG mentality and better ballhandling (he just doesn't turn it over frequently.

I agree we will miss dooling, AJ is not his replacement but more of Arroyo's (and an upgrade at that) would have been nice to have both but I guess like the saying goes "you can't have your cake and eat it too"

we need another PG preferrably a 2nd stringer so that AJ will be used as 3rd string and recieve increased minutes in the playoffs

Depends, offseason isnt over and Otis is still looking for a 3rd [or "2nd" if you like] PG.

I like the fact that AJ is more of a natural PG - his Ast/TO ratio last year was above excellent and that will pay hugely for us on offense. From what I understand AJ is a tough defender aswell so we still have that.

I liked Dooling - I love hustle players, but I did hold my breath alot with him running the offense; I just never felt comfortable. Will I now? Not sure but we'll see.

We'll have to see what we finish up in the back court after the offseason - but proper PG wise we are doing better; ability wise we might be worse off.

I too cringed whenever Dooling tried to run the offense. It was not a pretty sight.

It is a slight upgrade when you look at all the details. Johnson is no slouch on defense but doesn't bring the same type of tenacity every second like Keyon does. AJ however is a much better point guard. Offensively I'd rank them the same level. Dooling is good going to the basket and a solid mid-range shot, and Johnson has the ability to go off (see 40 points in a playoff game).

The big difference is the ability to run the offense. They both defend and can score in small minutes, but AJ is a fairly good point guard while Dooling never was.
