Dooling to NJ(sign&trade)

Dooling Is On His Way
Keyon Dooling is close to becoming a Net.
League sources said the Nets and Magic are close to agreeing on a sign-and-trade for the point guard Lawrence Frank pursued three years ago.
The Nets would send their $3.3 million trade exception to the Magic in exchange for Dooling, who then would sign a three-year deal for between $10 million and $11 million.
It could be agreed upon as early as tonight, but probably won't be finalized until next week. This move would give the Nets 16 players and almost certainly would spell the end of Marcus Williams' career with the team.
The Nets have been looking to move Williams the past two summers. Once they secure the veteran guard Dooling, there would be little need for Williams.

Hmm....very interesting. About this trade exception, is it something we can put to use this offseason?

Well that makes losing dooling a whole lot sweeter.
Nice.

Hoopsworld:
For the benefit of those who don't understand the exception, if a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return, they receive what's called a trade exception. Teams with a trade exception have up to one year to exercise it. This gives teams the ability to take in more salary than they send away as long as the total in salary they get in return is less than or equal to the difference in salary from the original trade.

Yep, it effectively means we can trade for a player up to around $3.5m without having to send his equivalent salary the other way.

If this goes through it might finally mark the beginning of Otis' "creative financing"

Nice, I heard through my sources though that we have to take back Brian Hill as a coach : ( .
Just kidding, this would be great if it's true.

Nice, atleast were getting something. Could come in handy in trade talks. Can it be packaged with players?

Nope which is why TE's aren't used all that often.
Kinda suprised we found a use for ours that was another of those nice gifts from the Kidd trade.

Good
but if they are unwilling to sign Dooling for fear of the luxury. I highly doubt they use this exception unless it is in a trade or an emergency in the middle of the season. This could allow them to go with only two point guards and then if they have an injury then they have it in the bag.

why would we want a TE when we aren't trying to add more salary? Has NJ already used their MLE? I feel like this is more of a favor for Dooling than anything else.

Yes we already used 3.4 Million of our MLE on Najera .

I'd be surprised if they end up using it. I don't recall a time when they ever have used a trade exception when they have had one -- though they might have had a small one that helped them acquire both Cook and Evans. But as you can see, that didn't really end up benefiting them for long. Maybe if there is a team looking to acquire an exception to help it make a trade.
I would have preferred that they have kept Keyon as long as they were going to sign him to the deal anyway. If they were going to pay someone that money, don't you think they just would have paid Keyon?
And if they use the exception, what about the contention that it was going to push them into luxury tax territory? Won't that still be the case?
I think they are doing this more as a favor to Keyon. If they didn't pay him that, then they would at least make sure he got the money he was looking for, and I don't think New Jersey could have given him that much otherwise.
All I can say is....I hope he doesn't pull a Darrell on the Magic next season. Good luck, Keyon. I'll miss you. (Still not happy if Anthony Johnson ends up being the No. 2 guy instead.)

Yeah, they used about $4m of it on Najera, so signing Dooling for $3m per couldn't have been done without a S&T.
I also would doubt whether we will use the exception, unless other deals are made in the meantime that free up some cap space. Still a nice asset to have in a bind.

Wouldn't this exception be the perfect thing to dangle to Memphis for Javaris, or maybe some other trade happening with bogans,JJ,Cook?

I doubt we will use it, but it's a nice little insurance to have in the event that something happens.
Say it's nearing the Trade Deadline -- one of our players gets hurt and we'd like to bring in someone to replace them for the later part of the season and playoffs. Then, say another team is looking to cut some salary. This would give us the ability to take on a replacement player, effectively "absorbing" their contract, that we otherwise couldn't have due to being above the cap, and having already use our MLE on Pietrus.
There could be other scenarios, this is just one example. Like I said, I doubt we'll use it, but is a nice little luxury to have in case we did need to use it.
Also, while it can't be combined in a trade, it could be used in conjunction with a number of say small trades which appeared to be one large trade, where the TPE is used to "absorb" a player in a deal, which is for all intents, part of a bigger deal. Everything else would have to match up naturally, but, again, it's a nice little bit of flexibility to have that we otherwise wouldn't have.
