Turk for Artest rumor

This came from a poster on the ozone forum. Not one of the "insiders", put a new poster no one knows. This rumor is likely BS, but its something to pass the time until Javaris gets here!!!

I thought it was interesting that the poster says the Magic have no intention of re-signing Turk and are looking to trade him before the deadline. Also, in the poster's proposed deal it looks like the Magic give up way too much for a disgruntled player and a bad contract. Redick and Bogans? That would leave just Pietrus (who has a history of missing games) and Lee (a rookie) at the 2. Plus, having to include a 1st round pick for someone who might leave after the season is ridiculous. It would be better to use that 1st rounder to get Javaris, who is at least a young prospect and is comparable to getting a young player in next years draft. And Cook is way better than Thomas (so is his contract). I also don't agree with what the poster says about the Magic not thinking Cook can contribute because he did last season.

I don't have any idea what Thomas's contract would do to the Magic's cap situation, so I'll leave that up to you cap experts.

http://orlandomagiczone.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8891029871/m/7651035915

With that said here is the specific trade that is supposedly being discussed:
Ron Artest , Kenny Thomas(who we'd likely buy out), and a 2009 second round pick for Hedo Turkoglu, JJ Redick, Brian Cook, and Keith Bogans and a 2009 lottery protected first round pick. So I asked why both teams would make this trade and this is what he said:

On Orlando’s side he said they feel that if Turkoglu has a season like he had last year that they will not be able to afford him. Apparently, the Magic have little intention of resigning Turk anyways, and were already planning on trading him at the deadline, but had concerns about the effects that could have on team chemistry at mid-season. By trading him before the season starts, they could avoid that. Plus, after the drubbing the Magic got in the playoffs by Detroits guard-corp, Stan Van Gundy is very high on the idea of a lockdown backcourt. If the Magic pull the trigger, then they'd have a backcourt that featured two potential lockdown defenders in Artest and Pietrus, plus a great interior defender in Dwight. Both Stan and Otis have been harping that "defense wins championships", and that defense would rival anything Boston did last year. Otis is also of the opinion that the worst thing this trade could end with is Artest leaving after this year, but since the Magic apparently don't intend to resign Turk, they wouldn't really be losing anything, since they don't think Bogans, Cook or Redick will contribute much this year anyways. He also said that the major sticking point right now is the 2009 1st. The Magic are really pushing to not have to give up the pick outright, since they're over the CAP and will need to use the draft to add talent. They are supposedly pushing to have that changed to giving the Kings the right to swap picks in the same way we did with Miami last year(which they didn't use). The problem is the Kings don't think they'll have a worse pick than Orlando, which would make that a useless trade piece for them. But right now both sides are deadlocked over that.

hell no...

1. B.S.
2. Hedo has made himself a comfy place with this team IMO.
3. we give up too much, he's supposed to be disgruntled, we should be able to negotiate something better than that...taking on KT's contract right now and shortening the roster?
4. Amway/Otis will not take on Artest.

Artest huh? do we really want that nutcase on our team? i know i don't, i rather see all the options we have for Turk... but i don't want to trade him

I definitely could not see Otis doing this. Turk was a huge part of what we did last year and I think he will try to re-sign him because he's a key piece.

Plus, a guy like Artest does not fit with what the Magic organization is going for. No way they'd give up all that for someone like him.

here we have another not-happening-in-a-million-years trade.
(check the david west thread for the other one)
this one is underestimating otis' intelligence by far

This is total BS. Otis is not gonna take on Kenny Thomas's contract. WTF if you are gonna pretend u are an "insider" because you are bored atleast make it believable. Ozone has now eclipsed the ESPN boards in term of absurdity.

I just don't see it. Hedo is our premier paymaker right now, something Artest can't do, let alone Hedo's place in the team chemistry. Both are expected to be FA's next year and should get paid. I don't see any advantage Artest would have over Hedo for this team right now. Thanks, but no thanks.

Wasn't there someone in the trade thread calling for a Hedo for Speights trade?

I'd say all message boards are equal in terms of the insanity they spew out. For everyone legitimately sound trade idea, there will be 100 ridiculous ones.

As for this alleged insider, I'd say that we'd definitely give up way too much in that scenario, but I'd definitely agree to a trade based around Turk for Artest that was more leveled off.

Hedo for Speights/Evans/Green, that was me, it was a trade proposal, not a rumor from an insider...that trade takes the team in a whole new direction in terms of front court dominance and salary would be under control for a few years as Evans and Speights have deals and Green comes off the books soon...while Evans may have some mental deficiencies, he's only made public record of them once...no where near insanity if I do say so myself...

There is a difference, that Hedo for Spleights trade was proposed by a poster here for discussion. This one trade, the poster claims that they got "insider" information saying the Magic are actually thinking about making this trade which is alot different. Sounds like a made up rumor because someone is bored, just like the whole JJ doesnt play because he is always late LMAO.

I wouldn't mind trading for Artest (I know, I know), but in this scenario we give up too much.

Like others have pointed out, the Magic would be the ones with leverage, not the Kings.

Hedo's value is way higher than Artest.

I think with players like Deng, Okafor, and the Josh's of Atlanta, that are out there and unhappy with the money offered to them. I feel that opens up better possibility's for Hedo.

idk if Hedo's value is "way" higher than Artest, I mean, after last season and his lack of issues, it is higher, but I wouldn't be confident grouping him in Okafor, Deng, Smith type of scenarios...

alright, now ive really had it. Just who is coming up with these garbage info is beyond me. Hedo is our core as mentioned by Otis and all this not wanting to keep him is just not true. Count on it, Hedo will remain with the magic come extention time. I will not have Artest here if I have to give up Hedo. I trust Otis, he is much smarter than that. I HOPE

Well, the one thing to consider with Hedo is by keeping him, Lewis continues to play out of position and continues to get banged up against bigger forwards.

Hedo seems likely to stay with the Magic, but there definitely is the possibility of a trade somewhere down the line.

Artest would move Lewis back to SF, and give us a stronger frontline, if it were to happen.

Hmm..I wouldn't be surprised if it was true that we are shopping Hedo and we know Sac has been wanting Hedo to come back, I believe last year there was a Hedo-Artest rumor swirling about.

Kenny Thomas will be wanted next year for teams looking to get cap room in 2010, thats like 8.5 mil off the books. Artest is a head case but a really good defender he has just this one year and we would have a pretty good defensive 2-3 combo. I still wouldn't do this trade as it was stated before it would leave us with only two 2 guards and no 1st for next year. If we were to trade Hedo for a defender I would rather do it for AK47 he gets injuried and has a hugh contract, it would put Shard back at his natural 3 and give Dwight a good help defender next to him.

Could we please stop with the Hedo its our PG crap?? Also IMO if Artest could go back to form i.e. non mental, it could be a great trade, dont underestimate Artests skills...

Now flame away
