CINCINNATI (AP)—Maybe receiver Chad Johnson can go by the name that his head coach hates.
The Cincinnati Bengals receiver has legally changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco in Broward County, Fla., a switch that became official this week, according to several media reports. Johnson, who lives in Miami, didn’t return a message left on his cell phone Friday night.
“It’s something I don’t think anyone has ever done before,” he told the team’s Web site. “Have I ever had a reason for why I do what I do? I’m having fun.”
Two years ago, Johnson gave himself the moniker—a reference in Spanish to his No. 85—and put it on the back of his uniform before a game. Quarterback Carson Palmer ripped it off before the kickoff.

I think its real stupid but if he wants to have fun with it go for it.
The thing i question about him is how serious is he about winning football games? Doesnt seem very serious about that at all and I can undertand Palmer yanking that thing of his jersey that one time. Sure he is entertaining but if i am a Bengals fan i want to win games.

Why do u think Chad was bitchin this whole off-season?? He wants to win more than anything, but the team trades their best defensive players & cuts their best running back.... And yet u guys question whether Chad wants to win??? Now that's comedy.
This is the All-Pro we're talking about, who is one of the top recievers in the league.... and u guys question his desire? .....even after he calls out the organization for their lack of acquiring talent to support him to try n make the team better?? If ur a Bengals fan, Chad is the only reason that team is even worth watching.....
This is what he was talking about tho. The team trades and/or cuts half of the good talent on the team..... and yet then when the team struggles, everyone wants turn around and point the finger at Ocho Cinco when he produces @ a higher level than almost everyone on that team...... That teams problem is with coaching and player management..... And maybe if they had a defense they could do something. Trust me, Ocho Cinco is NOT the problem, you would have to be naive to believe that. Let him have his fun on that pathetic excuse for a team.

Bigger douchebag than Brett Favre and Owens combined.
At least Owens goes out there and performs injured or not. Chad isn't even the best receiver on his team.

I actually think Chad Johnson is funny, he brings humor to the sport in an unharmful way (imo) but this is just ridiculous

Shouldn't it have been "ochenta y cinco?"

This guy is a wanna-be Terrell Owens. He's desperate for attention & is trying anything necessary to get it. He's a decent receiver but doesn't have the personality, so he has to pull stunts. I'm not saying that I'm a TO fan but he is a better receiver & he draws attention for his football skills as much as his off the field & sideline antics. All this name change rap isn't going to make the Bengals any better and definitely not draw any more endorsement deals.

I think this is hilarious. He doesn't hurt the sport in anyway and brings a lot of interest and good laughs to everything he does. I have no problem with Mr. Ocho Cinco lol and I think he is just a funny guy.

Football is the ultimate team sport, and what Chad has done is a big slap to the face to the people who helped make the sport what it is now, and everyone that sacrifices their own personal interests for the sake of the team. The real loser in this whole deal is Carson Palmer. He is probably counting the days his contract expires. The Dolphins are going to get him you just watch.
Edit: LOL nevermind. Palmer is signed through 2014. It's OK, Henne will have like 2 superbowls under his belt by then.

LMAO. Your the type of guy I cant stand. The guy who thinks celebrating after a play is harmful to the game in some kind of far fetched way..... I hate that new college fball rule, where u get a 15 yard penelty for celebration. Yeah, great idea. Let's just take all of the emotion, excitiment, and fun out of the damn game. The Bengals will suck becuz they cut every halfway decent role-player on the team and expect 1 or 2 superstars to just shoulder the load. Chad is flamboyant so they like to point the finger @ him when something goes wrong, which is why he wanted to be traded... when in fact, they have one of the worst defenses in the league, and then procede to cut their best defenders and then their starting running back.... But yeah, it's all Chad's fault. The team sucks because of him. GTFO of here with that terrible logic.... get off your dam high-horse and look @ the situation for what it is for urself. The problem is not Chad, it's the damn organization.... If u think Chad's the problem, im sorry ur an idiot.

Ok let me bring a rational point of view in here, from a Bengals fan since '88. The problem with the Bengals is not the coach, or the players, its MIKE BROWN. The Bengals don't have a GM..............let me repeat that, a NFL team doesn't have a GM. It basically creates a vortex because there's no guy in between the coach and owner trying to balance both of their desires. Plus Mike Brown is a cheap motherF*#&$ and doesn't want to spend the money because he thinks that because his last name is Brown he can lead a team like his father did. So he tries to be that guy himself, and this is why they have bad drafts and won't spend the money on big name free-agents and try to make do with what they have.
As far as Ocho goes, he's the best Bengals receiver EVER, PERIOD. TJ had 112 catches last year and CJ still had 1400 yards. WR are prima-donna's might as well get over that. He's way cooler than T.O. because this is the first year that he really has flipped out and just been like F it. I don't really blame him, he wants to win and this was just his way of venting. I mean T.O. tried to "kill' himself, Randy Moss is quiet only because he's on the Patriots, and Keshawn was doin this crap a long time ago. Ocho is a good dude, but I am wondering why they cut Rudi Johnson, I guess cuz he never got healthy after last year. Anyways, thats my rant, Bengals will be better than ppl realize this year even with like the hardest schedule in the league.

Too bad the XFL didn't stick around; he could have played in the XFL and put any thing he wanted on the back of his jersey without having to legally change his name.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdo ... nfl,106605Don't expect to see Chad Johnson Ocho Cinco wearing his new name on a jersey anytime soon. CNBC's Darren Rovell reports on his blog that the former Mr. Johnson would be forced to buy out the stock of the 100,000 remaining "C. Johnson" jerseys before making the switch to "Ocho Cinco". If Reebok asked Ocho Cinco to pay for the cost of making the unsold jerseys, the total could reach upwards of $4 million (or $50 million pesos).
Because Johnson changed his name so close to the start of the season, Reebok was left in a bind since they'd have to produce new jerseys and eat the old ones. That's why the NFL has told Johnson he'd have to reimburse the company for the price of the jerseys. That's not unprecedented, rookie linebacker Keith Rivers did it last week when he changed his uniform number. Of course, Rivers didn't have thousands of jerseys with his name on it on sales racks nationwide.
This whole charade, of course, is pretty ridiculous. It's tough to defend Johnson, as he's so narcissistic that he makes T.O. look like Mother Teresa. And the NFL is so blatant in their attempts to block Johnson from donning his new name on the back of his Bengals jersey that it almost seems beneath them. Sure, it's inane and self-serving and could set a bad precedent, but shouldn't the league be focusing on more important issues, like stopping players from celebrating touchdowns?

Hmmm... I wonder how the NBA felt about their flux of Iverson 76er's jerseys. Or the MLB about Red Sox Manny jerseys. This is ridiculous. Whether you agree with it or not, the No Fun League is really being stubborn about this. Making him buy out the rest of the jerseys? Are you serious? So, is a player responsible when he is traded and thousands of jerseys become worthless? Plus, you know Ocho Cinco jerseys will sell like hotcakes. (Incidentally, since hotcakes sell so well, why isn't IHOP the wealthiest company in existence?)
Come on, NFL. Get your collective head out of your collective rear and give the guy his due. He pulled one over on you. What they are doing now, making him wear a jersey without his last name on it, is idiotic and against their own rules.
