NBA star Grant Hill used 263,000 gallons in May. The Magic's Dwight Howard's estate soaked up 189,000 gallons in July alone.
TMZ.com LinkA spokeswoman for Howard said the basketball star, recently home from winning an Olympic gold medal, was surprised and disappointed to learn of his high water use.
Mary Ford said Howard was investigating the possibility of leaks or a faulty meter. One sprinkler-system leak was quickly discovered, and it might have started months ago.
"It's a concern, and Dwight is making every effort to deal with it," Ford said. "By no means does he want to waste water."

I believe Dwight Howard and Grant Hill are working on a movie together called "Noah's Ark 2", so I don't see the big deal here. We all know about Dwight's religion and Grant Hill is desperate to leech on to something new.

If Grant spent 14.5 hours a day flushing his toilet (not a low-flow variety, natch), he could use 263,000 gallons in 30 days, assuming 5 gallons & 30 seconds per flush.
A 26-day shower would do the trick, too.

Ponder this:
Woods also owns a home on a large estate in Martin County. It was billed for 1.3 million gallons in January. Since then, the Woods home has used more than a half-million gallons a month on average.
In Orange County it was slightly over 100 thousand gallons a month.
He has everyone beat when it comes to water usage.

Their stately homes have large gardens with plants not native to Florida. These properties require constant watering. These systems are so large that they can often have small failures that lead to further use through accidental leaks (the posted stories claim this is part of what happened in Howard's case).

Well, Dwight needs to lose the cacti & plant some vegetation native to Florida, like weeds.

They use all that water doing the same thing many of my neighbors do. They set their high powered sprinking system to come on in the wee hours on watering days, to turn off at 10:00, come back on at 4:00 and stay on until midnight. This deposits several inches of water on grass that doesn't need water during normal weeks and does fine with a half inch twice a week in dry weeks. The difference is that they have many acres of lawn rather than the 1/8 acre of my neighbors.
A million people overwatering their small lawns do a lot more damage than a few millionaires soaking their estates.
