SI: Position battles-SG

Post#1 » by Optimus_Steel » Wed Sep 24, 2008 5:07 pm

7. Magic shooting guard
• The main candidates: Mickael Pietrus, Keith Bogans, J.J. Redick

• The skinny: Seeking an upgrade at the position, the Magic let Maurice Evans depart via free agency and signed Pietrus, formerly of the Warriors, to a four-year, $25 million contract. Pietrus brings a reputation as a hard-nosed defender, but he has never been a regular starter and might be more suited to play small forward. Bogans, who started 35 games last year for the Magic, is a tough competitor who could challenge for the role. Redick would have to show vast improvement to get in the picture, but the former Duke sharpshooter will get another chance. Orlando also drafted a shooting guard, Courtney Lee, in the first round in June.

Actually it sounds like SI is saying what SVG said as well that starting order has not been decided yet. Players will have to earn playing time, but it also sounds like SI is saying that the rookie will have to learn how to play in the NBA before getting that second slot.

With Lee, If he plays defense with alot of intensity in training camp and the preseason he is gonna get a lot of playing time. He can shoot and is way more athletic than Bogans and JJ so it hinges on how hard he plays defense which is what Stan will harp on.

The rotation at SG should be:
Pietrus
JJ
Lee

we should let Munns and Munns go, or package him in some kind of trade

Whether one thinks that Redick or Lee will get the #2 minutes at the SG slot, it is quite clear that Bogans will log SF minutes this year.

I think he even played some SF in his rookie year here.
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Wow...there are people out there that still think JJ is capable of contributing? (Keep in mind, when I say contributing...that means more than other shoot guard(s) on our roster)
