JJ beating Bogans on defense?

Post#1 » by magicmamma » Fri Oct 17, 2008 5:20 pm

Schmitz blog

In what might qualify as a basketball bombshell, J.J. Redick has maintained a narrow lead in his shooting-guard race against Keith Bogans on the strength of his. . . .defense.

Yes, J.J., long criticized for not being able to stop or even slow opposing players, has made " a significant improvement," Coach Stan Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy even went as far to say that Redick is executing "defensive principles" better right now than Bogans and rookie Courtney Lee. "Keith is still a better individual defender," Van Gundy said. "J.J. makes fewer mistakes."

I like Bogans, but it's not hard to make fewer mistakes than him.

JJ will be traded very soon. I would be shocked if this was all legit talk and JJ was playing regular minutes this season.

I'm torn in what to think at this point. I too like what I've seen from JJ. The fg% is not a worry, while his defense, rebounding, and ball movement have been solid. He looks like a starter, if not a definite rotation player, in the NBA. The problem is Bogans is Bogans, and can contribute well for us. Also, C. Lee is a stud and will also be great for us. So what do we do?

At this point, if I were guessing, I still say JJ is our sixth man and Bogans is gone, even though keeping Bogans for his expiring and then re-signing Turk is about as solid a reason for trading JJ as there is. Courtney continues to develop his combo skills and the Magic dip into the tax to re-sign Hedo, negating the need for creative financing.

With Wilks out for the year and JCrittgetting few minutes in Memphis...maybe time for Otis to start talking trade? We need another point, but I don't see the rush to trade either JJ or Bogans...again, we have to think of Bogans s a backup 3 (like getting Hedo's minutes yesterday) rather than the 4th SG. We need his expiring to resign Hedo!

Man I hated Redick throughout all of college and I was semi-happy that he came to us, partly because I could see him as the type of guy that would avg. 7pts a game yet hit us up for 22pts every time he played us. That being said, i REALLY don't want to trade him now that he would be scorned against us and thus fufil my prophecy of Reddick being that classic "who the hell is this guy killing us" that the Magic seem to have.
Whether you think you CAN or you think you CAN'T, you're right.

I'm just grateful that the biggest drama on our team this year is the 3rd string SG situation.

Our starting 5 is unquestioned for the first time in a decade, and it's rock solid. We are fortunate.

The drama is understandable, because Redick's past makes some of us think that he JUST MIGHT be a star 6th man, even the starter before we signed Pietrus. We don't feel that way about Bogans.

I'd be lying if I said I would be unfazed by Redick being traded. I to still believe he has game changing skills.

I feel that we keep everyone and the only player we try to part with is Cook. Trade cook for Critt if possible and then make these moves.

CLee to PG/SG primarilly PG
JJ to the 6th Man backup SG to Pietrus
Bogans to the backup SF behind Lewis if Hedo is out for some time
Battie to the PF spot to make Lewis back to the SF
Critt to 3rd PG and goodbye good ridence to Cook

why would Memphis make that deal?

and then do we waive AJ and if not, who becomes 3rd string PG, Lee or Critt?

I was not by anymeans say waive AJ I was looking at the fact he is hurt for right now. Never wanted to waive AJ. I am just trying to part ways with Cook to get a 3rd PG. Cook is expiring so I figured that is why we trade him. I do not care if we traded Cook to NJ for DA. Just bring in a 3rd PG.

I don't think Memphis makes that deal... and what? why would we waive AJ... Lee would still be primarily third or second string at sg, and critt would definitely be third at point... Critt isn't good enough yet to take over for AJ

I dont even think we need Critt. Sure it would be nice to get him cheap and see if he can develop but we dont really need him. If Lee proves soon that he can play some point we dont need Critt and may not need to trade JJ or Bogans.

I wish the Magic to keep their better #2 SG and trade the other (this excludes Lee as the #3).

If Redick wins the race, then Bogans has got be be traded.

If this is for a new #3 PG or a new combo big, the Magic do not need four SGs.

In the article, Van Gundy is quoted as saying that Redick is executing "defensive principles" better than Bogans. Pardon my stupidity, but what the heck does that mean? Is he rotating on help defense better?

yes. basically that's what it means. He's been better in rotations, and with the team defense concept. But if on an island 1 on 1, KEBO is still better then JJ.

IMO if it's even CLOSE defensively then Redick is your guy, cause he's considerably better on the offensive end.

Trade JJ for Crittenton. Cut Wilks. Sign Dwayne Jones. I like how that makes us look.

Jameer/AJ/Critt
Pietrus/Lee/Bogans
Hedo/Bogans/Richardson
Shard/Battie/Cookie
Dwight/Gortat/Foyle/Jones

How about trading Cammo to the Thunder and that will solve all of the Magic lineup problems.
