It was the overly dramatic proclamations in the last game that really started to irritate me. "OH BOY, YOU DON'T WANT JOEL EMBIID HOLDING HIS KNEE!" As if he's hoping that Embiid is hurt. Miller just likes to pour gas on a fire and is a certified blowhard.
I like Kevin Harlan, but Hubie Brown is still my all time favorite announcer. It's so cool that at damn near 90, he's still at it.
It's beyond rare now, but I like broadcasters that let the event be the star and just call and describe the action without histrionics and drawing attention to themselves. And for crying out loud, we don't need to hear blather every damn second. Dedes and Hill are a rare example of how it should be done.
Harlan has read the gushing praise he gets (which is a mystery to me) and much like Verne Lundquist seeks to make every moment one that makes the ESPN highlight reel.
Harlan is dramatic for sure, but he doesn't work my nerves the way Miller does. Ryan Ruocco is another one that I simply cannot stand. Ruocco's voice just cuts through my brain like a scalding knife through melting butter. I guess I"m just showing my age these days complaining about these guys.
Hubie Brown is my all time favorite. Doug Collins, Mike Fratello back when they did were great. I like Hill and Dedes for the most part. Like you said, they let the game be the star. JJ Reddick isn't a bad one either. I like him, I like Richard Jefferson quite a bit. Mike Breen screaming "BANG" gets a little excessive, but he's pretty good. In a perfect world my guy Tom McGinnis would just team up with Hubie Brown (who's from PA) and just announce only Sixer games.
Hey, we have to listen to them for a couple of hours, so I have no problem with criticizing or praising them.
I'm not with you on Hubie, other than respecting the fact that he's 140 yrs. old and still doing this with energy. I get a kick out of him, but he tends to grate after a while. Never liked Fratello, and Collins was fine until he started sniffing himself after a while.
Breen is a superior play by play guy going back to his years with the Knicks, but he's another who has gotten a bit big for his britches. And with him we have to put up with Van Gundy's wackiness and sometimes the dreadful Mark Jackson. Breen with a guy like Grant Hill would be fantastic.
Agree on JJ and Jefferson, both do a solid job and just focus on the game, offering their expertise. Another play by play man who's very good is Ian Eagle - together with Jim Spanarkel they do a great job.
Man, all I want is a play by play guy who calls it straight without histrionics and a color guy to offer things from his experience in the league that we might not already know. That formula is pretty much obsolete these days.
