I don't like the Klay comp either. As you said, McCain already looks like he'll be a superior playmaker, but he'll also never be the defensive stopper that was one of prime Klay's hallmarks. If McCain can even be net neutral on the defensive end, and he has the bulk to be able to hold up on that end, it will be enough with his offensive upside.
McCain also isn’t close to Klay as an off ball shooter, at least not now. He has a pretty low release point and doesn’t really take movement shots of any kind (let alone the wild fadeaway spins off picks), can’t get off shots like Klay could for all of his prime. Remember prime Klay could score 50 sometimes just from catch and shoot.
McCain also figures to shoot quite a for more 3s off the bounce than prime Klay did. He’s much more of a creator than just an off ball sniper.
I don't think he can ever be an elite off the ball sharpshooter like Klay was that goes in like butter. Very few can.

Klay may be the 2nd best shooter all time. You don't have to be as good to play similarly. Even twins aren't the same, it's a comparison or truly a projection of where he needs to work towards. Early Klay was never a volume ball handler with Steph and Monte, Robinson or David Lee, Bogut, Draymond running more offense. But he's always come off of screens for pullup 3s or in transition, bump off mid range pull-up and has gotten to the rim (remember the key to the warriors was Klay and Steph movement shooting spaces and causes confusion, but they all focus on paint points). Also a underrated passer with a underrated 1 on 1 game. Never a lead guard level passer or anything, but neither was McCain in college really.
His handling and passing still has a ways to go, and he can go that route due to his size (as I also clearly brought up Jamal Murray) but he'll be best to be great off ball too for the team and himself.
The idea that he does no movement shooting can easily be disproved with three minute highlights from his last three games on YouTube
