Some thoughts

Post#1 » by arfer0384 » Tue Feb 19, 2008 8:04 am

What's up guys? Been awhile. Admittedly, I haven't seen much of the Sixers this year. So, I've got some questions and random thoughts:

1. How are some of the young guys coming along? Everyone seems to be pleased with Thaddeus Young; that's good to hear. How about Jason Smith?

2. How has Iguodala been doing this season? His numbers are looking a little better than last year's. Do you think he's best suited at SG or SF?

3. For a long time, I was all for trading Andre Miller; like most of you guys, I wanted Oden or Durant in last year's draft. However, after hearing what he's done for the team this year, I think he'd be a great guy to have around. This is his 9th year in the league, so he's not old; also, PGs tend to last longer than some other players.

4. Following that thought, what do you guys think the team should do this offseason to get closer to championship level? I would love to acquire a big-time PF. Elton Brand would be great. If we go the draft route, Darrell Arthur would be a nice pickup. I'd be fine with something like this:

PG- Miller
SG- Iguodala
SF- Young
PF- Brand/Arthur
C - Dalembert

5. Does anyone know what the cap room situation is looking like for next year? I've seen some figures thrown around here and there; hopefully we're in a position to make a splash in free agency!

1) Smith and Williams both played very well earlier in the season, but have since dropped off quite a bit in their performances. Young didn't play much in the beginning of the season, but ever since he's showed that he was a big time hit in the draft.

2) Andre has been up and down. He's struggled pretty mightily in some games, and others he's played very well. Not that it wasn't obvious before, but he's only shown that he can't handle being the #1 option on this team. He is probably best suited for SF, but he will likely be playing SG for this team with Young our future SF.

3) You'll get a mixed response with Miller. I think some posters who in the past were for trading Miller may have eased up on their stance because the time he should have been traded has long passed. He ruined last season, and now he's all but ruined this season. I'm still all for trading him by this Thursday, but from all the reports, it's not going to happen.

4) A PF is at the top of the list for obvious reasons. The general consensus on the board is for Okafor or Josh Smith. I for one would also love the acquisition of Brand. My order of preference is Brand, Okafor, Smith.

5) I believe we'll be somewhere in the range of 9-10 million. Not enough to steal any of the PF's listed above from their teams which is that much more upsetting that Miller is still here. Not only is he hurting the chances of a higher draft pick, but also in acquiring that big time PF. Posters do have hope though that we can use Miller as an expiring next season as a trade chip for a PF like the Lakers did with Kwame to get Gasol. That may be what Ed is hoping for also. Who knows. But personally, I think it's unlikely because the only player I see that could be in that position next season is O'neal. And even that isn't for certain.

That pretty much sums up most of the topics on this board in the last couple of months.

Noone is pretty much on the ball. Its been a year of qualified half successes.

-Iguodala has shown he can consistently play at a top level and has cut down his TO's...but does not look to be a top flight star that can ancor a franchise.

-Lou Williams seems to be a legit scorer and a team player... but he does not look ready top be a full time PG.

-Smith has shown he can play in this league... but is likely just a rotation guy and and needs at least a year to bulk up and polish his game.

-Young is more NBA ready at PF than expected and has a great upside... but he is not NBA ready at SF and it will be a few years before we know if he will be a star.

-Sam has finally become a consistent contributer at center... but has shown minimal signs of developing a go to post game.

-Evans has toughened up our previous bad rebounding... but he is a nightmare on offense and it is debatable whether his is worth his long contract.

-Green has been a more selective shooter and no longer seems to hurt the team when on the court... bot he still is the worst starting SG in the league.

-Miller continues to impress as a gamer who keeps the team competitive... but who knows how many years he has left in the tank, and how much of a blow to the team it would be if we move him.

-The team is much better than expected- clearly not one of the very bottom teams in the league as predicted...but just as clearly lacks to promise of emerging franchise players or post players to build around into a contend.

The team has many good pieces and is going in the right direction (and is fun to watch)... but it remains unclear how they can turn this team into a real winner.

I gotta say; two very good responses to the initial post.

I would say that THAD's future is at the #3 position not the 4, but he has a bit of combo in him depending on who is on the court.

Iggy --well he's Iggy. until he shoots better (if ever) he'll always be "just iggy"

Miller is an absolute conundrum:

1) he is the reason this team is any good-- its not even close
2) he is 5-7yrs older than any1 else on the roster
3) he is (most likely) on the downisde of his career
4) $10mill a year??? (after next)

NOONE is right when he says Miller is the reason we aren't talking about Horford, Oden or Durant this year; but it is kinda funny that Miller is so good, "he ruined" two years now... LOL

trading him b4 thursday i think inevitably lessens his value to this team for the simple fact that trading him almost any other time than NOW, would have "benefitted" the 76ers w this years draft pick.

If he goes now, its not likely the 76ers can drop down to #6 or so (although IMO, they would then be a legit bottom feeder w/o a #1 franchise option (miami, Minn & Memphis all believe they have that AND a better lottery pick as of now)

they are going in the right direction; they are fun to watch, especially when Willie Green is on the bench! ahahah

I think that if Miller goes, the heart, mind and soul of the team goes w him. At that point, we will be forced to find a new leader, ring master and glue piece-- all of those "integral" characteristics that can be taken lightly yet are very hard to quantify.

i fear that we are having this same post, standing, dilema again next year, when Miller has an expiring-- yet again, most likely too late to obtain a top 5 or so lottery pick.

lots of work to be done, but at least this team is young and plays so damn hard, that I cant be mad at them even tho i feel its in the 76ers best interest to have a bad record and take that higher probability chance in the lottery...

Minnesota 2nite should be a decent gauge-- Twolves know they can win tonite and off of the all-star break, every1 is rested....

great posts b4 me fellas-- not to extreme either way, but fair
