Why does everyone take internet fourms so seriously?

I'm sorry but what is the point of "banning" people and "locking" threads"? That just gets really annoying. Also "flame wars" and "trolling"? If someone makes a post you dont like, why cant you just ignore it? Why do people actually act like being called a dumbass or a (Please Use More Appropriate Word) over the internet should be taken seriously? I used to randomly post on the Lakers board from time to time and this uptight mod delted every post i ever made there just because he thought I was trying to start a flame war between Lakers and Suns fans. People should just relax. It is the internet. We're all anonymous and what we do or say should not affect other people.

As for banning people, it's pretty obvious. Some people become so hostile that it makes coming here and discussing basketball no fun. So people stop coming here. Had you been here during the rickypryor/jemagee days, it becomes obvious. One or two people who do not show respect to others can seriously detract from enjoyment everyone gets from the board.

As for locking threads, the reason it generally happens on this board is to keep the board somewhat uncluttered. If one person starts 8 threads about the same subject, other subjects that people want to get discussed move to page 2 and get ignored.

It would be nice if people ignored others they generally don't get along with, but as long as they're not hostile, then it's not necessary.

Unfortunately just because you're anonymous doesn't mean your actions won't affect other people. People come here because they enjoy talking about basketball. If that's no longer enjoyable (because of the actions of other posters), they simply stop coming here. Clearly, that's not good for those who enjoy talking about the Sixers.

I will say that I try to treat my posts teh same way. I never say anything here I wouldn't sya to someone in a bar setting chatting about the game on TV.

I think the problem is posts like The Tattoo post which went out and was allowed to go on. I, personally have been reprimanded for less offensive posts than that, and I have a feeling other posters have too.

It seems that the interpretation of tone, intent and emotion are not necessarily accurate or fair sometimes and some people get warning while others keep on writing.

That is it in a nutshell. Some people enjoy the hostile banter and just keep ripping their "opponent" with no real interest in the topic. Others come to hear what other "fans" have to say about current developments with the team. Those two elements of the forum do not mix well and usually the less hostile fans just stop coming.

Now that should be the golden rule of forum posting. I can't say that I have always abided by that rule ... I do get overly agressive or sarcastic at times. But, never-the-less it is what we all should work toward.

without a mod locking threads and banned posters this forum would be like the "the other Board" which i rarely visit anymore becuase it is a rare occasion that there is anything worth reading let alone getting opinions on.

Sometimes moderators on some of the forums do go overboard and make mistakes. This particular forum is generally well-run, though there are some forums on realgm where the mods are much too trigger happy and make the experience less than optimal.

Unfortunately though, there are certain posters who repeatedly post pointless posts about whatever inane topic comes to their head and the forum would quickly be filled with junk if there were absolutely zero quality standards.

I do not know a lot about your forum,but I started posting here recently because you seem to have a set of rules which I like very much.I have seen other 76ers forums get out of control,because when everybody is getting something for free with no strings attached, they are not able to deal with it.

Well, that is because they might actually be 3rd graders ... LOL ...

Seriously, that is one thing that can be a problem with the Internet forums ... you never know, for sure, what level of person you are conversing with. It could be a child or a senior citizen ... you cannot tell the difference. So, sometimes, if the discussion begins to sound a little childish ... maybe there is a good reason for that.
