We read everywhere that the sixers have about 11 mil under the cap and that's not nearly enough to add a big FA like Brand (if he opts out). Well, is there really a way to pay Brand a starting salary around 14+ mil AND keep Iguodala (at least for next year)?
Consider this...
Andre turned down big money last summer and everyone was shocked by it. By most accounts, it was for a deal at close to 11 mil per season. Assuming Andre won't accept anything less than that, are we willing to step up and offer him more? Personally, I hope not. Assuming Memphis (or any other team with cap room after opt-outs and such) doesn't go after him, that would mean there is no big contract to be had for Andre this offseason. That would lead to the possibity that he gets frustrated and could say "fine, I will sign the 1 yr tender, become an UFA next season and see who wants me then". I'm sure no one thinks he will do this and risk injury, but truth is, he took the exact same risk last year so why would we think he won't do it again? That contract was more than fair and Andre apparently didn't think so, so I can't see why he won't be in the same boat this offseason.
Assuming it was to play out like this (signing the 1 yr tender), we could easily have the money to sign Brand to a huge deal and still keep AI for next year. As far as I know, the one year tender is WAY lower than the current cap hold amount Andre will tie up on the cap. From what I know, the 1 yr tender for Andre is close to 4 million. That means that we would actually have 15 million in cap room, and not 11, if it was to play out like this.
Now I know some of you would say, we can't risk losing AI for nothing next offseason, we either need to sign him long-term now or use him in a S/T. My retaliation to that is we would not lose him for nothing in my scenario. Worst case, we got Brand for AI (we can't get both unless Brand takes a serious pay cut). I'd take Brand any day of the week in that 1 for 1 swap. The othr part to this is while AI is an UFA next year, we would still hold his bird rights whick would give us the option to exceed the cap to re-sign him next year (or use him in a S/T). In effect, we still would have the most $$ to throw his way next year. This gives Andre another year to prove his worth and it gives us another year to see what he can do with a true #1 option in the post. Does that make Andre look even better or does it show he's a 3rd option on a good team and not worth the $$ he seeks? It's a risk Andre may want to take (he seems very confident in his abilities). Would Andre be willing to put off his big payday in order to actually give the Sixers the cap room to bring in a big name with the idea being he gets taken care of next year?
Just a thought that I have never seen mentioned andI don't think it's completely crazy. The odds ar elow I know, but crazier things have happened. Someone correct me if I misrepresented anything about Andre's 1 yr tender option.
