Please explain our capspace to me...

Post#1 » by Samson » Thu Jul 3, 2008 4:25 am

Sorry for being a little late and a little ignorant on this..but my internet has been down for 3 weeks, just got back up tonight, and I recently started a new job so I can't be playing around on the net at work as much as I used to (at least not yet...)

I've read that we have 12.4 million ( I think ) in caproom, and basically no one besides Memphis is close...

BUT, we also have Iguodala and LWill as RFA's...

so, explain to me this, does that mean we have 12.4 million to throw at any OUTSIDE player , plus unlimited (well I mean as much as the Sixers WANT ) to pay Iguodala and/or Louis Williams?

The way I *THINK* it is , we can spend 12.4 or whatever the exact number is, on other FA's and then we can use that whole Bird Rights/whatever on our own players, but then if/when we exceed the cap we pay luxury tax right?

If my beliefs are correct, am I the only one who says, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead! Comcast has plenty of money, it's been like 10+ years since we've had real FA money, it will probably be another 10 before we can do it again regardless of what we do this offseason, I say, pay Josh Smith as much as we can possibly pay OR as much as it takes, then resign Iguodala and LWill to contracts that make both of them plenty happy.. because seriously, luxury tax/future capspace be damned, a lineup of

C: Samuel Dalembert / Jason Smith
PF: Josh Smith / Marreese Speights
SF: Thad Young / Willie Green (booo)
SG: Andre Iguodala / Rodney Carney
PG: Andre Miller (also a decent expiring contract next year right?) / Louis Williams

That has to be one of the youngest, and definitely like THE MOST athletic teams in the league. Years ago you would pay just to see AI. In a year or so that would be a team you would pay just to see them run....

All I wanna know is...who's with me?

With Baron Davis opting out, Golden State has ca 19 million.

so, explain to me this, does that mean we have 12.4 million to throw at any OUTSIDE player , plus unlimited (well I mean as much as the Sixers WANT ) to pay Iguodala and/or Louis Williams?

Kinda. Until Iguodala (and Louis) are re-signed, renounced, or signed elsewhere, they have cap holds. Iguodala's is 3 x his last years salary, or 8.4 million. That 12 million counts this 8.4 towards that. So if he signs for 10 million before we use that $ elsewhere, our available cap space goes down 1.6 million. If we use that 12 million before we sign Iguodala to something else, we can go over the cap to re-sign Iguodala.

but then if/when we exceed the cap we pay luxury tax right?

No, the Luxury tax is a different number than the salary cap.

(for those that care, the luxury tax level is 61% of the Basketball Related Income, the salary cap is 51% of the BRI).

so, explain to me this, does that mean we have 12.4 million to throw at any OUTSIDE player , plus unlimited (well I mean as much as the Sixers WANT ) to pay Iguodala and/or Louis Williams?

Not unlimited. There are limits placed based on the experience of the player. But if we use the cap space first, we can go over the cap to re-sign Iguodala and Williams (and signing Iguodala and Williams first doesn't automatically cut into the cap space, it only cuts in if we sign them for more than their cap holds).

it's been like 10+ years since we've had real FA money, it will probably be another 10 before we can do it again regardless of what we do this offseason

If we don't spend this year, we'll actually have significantly more next year.

A couple of things....

1) Golden State now has around $19MIL in space which is far more than us or Memphis

2) The cap space we have (somewhere between $11 and $12MIL) is including Iguodala and Williams' cap holds which means we could sign someone with the $11MIL and they re-sign Lou and Dre.

3) I think Smith stays in Atlanta no matter what we offer him which will be all of our cap space. I think Atlanta told him to go set the market price for him and then they'll match.

4) The lineup you posted isn't younger than Portland or Seattle's projected lineups. Also, that lineup is lacking a post-presence and shooters... that's not good. Without either, teams could play a zone on us and like in the playoffs... we would struggle mightily in a half-court set.

All of that said... I'd be happy if we got Smith. This team could improve in a lot of areas and it would be exciting to watch.

Wow OK then...Thank you very much 'bods that was a very succinct and informative answer....

One more thing, that was a lot of information to process....Connect the dots for me here then...Can we pay Josh Smith the 12 mil, plus give Iguodala that 57 or more contract and also pay LWill (who knows how much he's asking for?)...

Is it all possible?

Thanks brother..big help.

it is possible assuming we sign Josh Smith first.

My question is if we do all of this are we cap strapped for the next decade? Will we be able to make other moves next year or are we basically like the Wizards.

We wouldn't be the wizards because the Wizards are re-signing guys who have a max contract ridiculously high, because they're on their 3rd contracts and they have bird years. If we do Smith, Iguodala and Williams, we wouldn't be in cap hell, but it's unlikely we'd have max cap room next year either (unless we dump Evans + Green, and let Miller expire, then it's theoretically possible).

If we sign Smith, Iguodala, and Williams then we're pretty strapped but we will get a tiny bit of relief in the form of Andre Miller's expiring contract. However, the odds of him re-signing are slim and if we just let him walk we won't have much cap space to go get a starting PG on an open market. We could do a sign and trade with Miller next summer but that's not a given and you're not going to get a PG back from a team trying to sign Miller.
