Maybe all that adds up to a low pricetag? Would anyone be so sad to see Carney leave? Evans? That Utah pick everyone loves to throw into trades?

And what about a sign and trade with Miller for Calderon?

Raptors are aiming pretty immediately with Jermaine on their squad now and they really don't need so much a 3-point shooter from the 1-position because they have shooters like Kapono, Parker, Delfino (even Bosh shoots 3's).

If we could get Calderon for the money A. Miller earns now, and we sign him for 5 years, our pg issues are gone for 4 years.

Than we also have a lot of cash to improve our bench and 4-position.

The Memphis liking Iggy thing intrigues me considering their glut at the PG position. If Stefanaski had a handle on what else was out there I wouldn't mind dealing Iggy to Memphis and getting back Crittenton as our PG of the future. We'd then be looking to fill PF and SG, but we'd have PG ok for after Miller is gone and depending on what salary Memphis would probably try to work into the deal we'd have another $4 to $5mil available under the cap which would probably put us closer to $17mil.

With that kind of money it would be possible to maybe make a run at both Josh Smith and Monte Ellis. At the least it would let the Sixers go max for any RFA and still have money left to fill a need elsewhere.

I dislike the ideas of guys like Crittenton as our future pg because they haven't done anything up to now in this league.

Same for Conley. Why take a risk on a guy that can be a complete bust while Calderon has already shown how efficient he can play.

Get this guy Ed!!

I don't really see how you can say things like "Go get him Ed" like Stefanaski has any choice in the matter.

The Raptors can match any offer you make and their GM is talking a good bluff if he really doesn't plan to do it.

I think the only way the Sixers could make the Raptors rethink things is if they threw him a long-term deal for like 10mil per and that would be RIDICULOUSLY STUPID for them to do.

So I think this is pretty much a non-issue.

I think when you look at some teams and RFA's (like Atlanta) it's more worthy of entertaining the discussion simply because of what we know of Atlanta's ownership.

I'd love to see the Sixers get Calderon, but I dismissed it almost immediately as not having any realistic chance of happening. The Sixers could give him an offer sheet, but what would be the point? They'd either have to overpay a horrendous amount to make Toronto think twice and otherwise you're just tying yourself into when the Raptors match it.

During that time you wouldn't have your money available for anything else. I don't see it as something Stefanaski would do. I think he's going to keep his options open and only is going to tie the sixers into an offer sheet if he thinks they have a legit chance of getting the RFA.

If Ed Stefanski is even THINKING about paying Calderon $10 mil per year for 5 years (which would, BTW, be $14-15 millon MORE than Hinrich would be - as Hinrich's contract is shorter by 1 year), I would not go to a game this year.

Seriously.

Calderon - for all of his skills - is not a great fit for this team, IMO. He is a sub-par defender (meaning that you have ZERO shot of playing him with Lou) - on a team that FINALLY started playing perimeter defense with some efficiency. He's never won a playoff series...and for that matter, he's never been an 82 game, 35-38 mpg PG for a full season...

And you want to get into a freaking bidding war with the Raptors and GROSSLY overpay for him?

Have fun.

Thought I would pass along the news to you guys.

Early this morning, through my agents, I reached a preliminary agreement with the Toronto Raptors. I want to thank Bryan Colangelo, Maurizio Gherardini, Sam Mitchell and all of the Raptors family for the confidence that they have placed in me. I am sure that together we are going to achieve big things in the future.

On the flip side, his 3 pt shot would fit in like a GLOVE, and his ability to hit cutters would be great for Thad, Speights, and even Iguodala, all of whom move well off the ball.

It's a tradeoff I would have been willing to make. Calderon's legit.

Calderon doesn't have strong handles I believe, he just had a good three point shooting team and a 20/10 forward in Chris Bosh. Oh, and now he has Jermaine O'Neal. Don't think of this as the Curry/Randolph knicks. Even in his injured state, Jermaine O'Neal is a hell of a shotblocker. And although he's had trouble passing out of the double in the past, with all of the targets on the Raptors. I don't think it'll be a problem. Watch out for the Raps.

Wait, what? Have you seriously ever seen him play? Handles would be about the last thing you would question on Calderon. Want to say his defense is less than stellar? Ok, I'm in full support there. But when you question his handles? I just don't see it.

dabods:

I do not disagree with the premise that Calderon is a solid PG...but my three probalems with the guys stand...

1) He is certainly not a plus-defender, and at a time where our perimeter defense is FINALLY showing signs of getting better, the last thing I want to do is lock in a PG for the next five years who will guarantee dribble penetration;

2) He has never been a 82 game, 35 mpg PG in this league...even for ONE season;

3) He will cost an INSANE amount of money to sign.

For me, Hinrich is cheaper (less years and $$$), a better defender, a more proven commodity (last season notwithstanding), and we may have LEVERAGE in terms of moving some contract to them (we will have ZERO leverage with Toronto).

I'm glad that Calderon is off the table - the price would have been too high for what we would have gotten, IMO.

I'm sorry but this makes no sense. During his first season, Mike James was the starting PG (remember his contract year? 20ppg). During the second year, TJ Ford was the starting PG and during last season, they shared duties at the point. What do you expect? And during the time when Ford was out 24 days with the Al Hordford incident, Calderon became an absolute beast while playing 38 minutes a game. You're not making any sense.

FYI he signed for 5 years at 40 million. Not an insane amount of money by any standards!
