Does Evans Have A Future In Philly?

Post#1 » by The Guilty Party » Sat Jun 28, 2008 2:36 pm

I posted this on another board and am curious as to what this board's thoughts are about Reggie Evans...
*****************

I know Reggie Evans' name came up in trade talks along with Andre Miller before the draft for Shawn Marion. At the time, it seemed like he was just filler but now that we've taken Speights, I'm wondering if Evans is as good as gone. Most of us assume that Stefanski will acquire a PF one way (free agency) or another (trade) so if that's the case, then our depth chart will look like:

1: Miller/Williams
2: Iguodala/Green
3: Young/Carney
4: NEW PF/Evans/Speights/Hill
5: Dalembert/Smith/Blount

It would seem to me that the removal of Evans off of this roster would open up a decent amount of PT for Speights. Also, when you consider that the new PF will probably chew up 36 minutes a game and Sam will take up 33 minutes, that leaves just 27 minutes a game for the reserves 4/5. I'm sure Mo will run a small lineup during the game with Thad getting 4 or 5 minutes at the 4, so that trims the free minutes left to 22 to be split between Smith, Evans, and Speights.

Considering his salary and the lack of a need for him, should Reggie Evans find himself having a "One and Done" career in Philly? I think so.

I don't think they'll let him be the difference in making a larger deal like the one that you mentioned for Marion. On the other hand, I don't think they'll try to move him because of the intensity that he brings and because he is a fan favorite. Too bad that Amundsen never got off the bench last year because he was signed to be an energy guy & last season showed that there is no need for two at the same position. I think he could have been a similar if less talented player.

I have always liked Evans since his Seattle days, but we have him too early in our development as a team. He's the sort of reserve that puts you over the top when you have your core pieces in place. We are still searching for those core pieces so trading Evans to improve the starting lineup/talent level is definitely a huge option. Evans, Miller, and Willie Green are all players that I would give away for any long term player(s) that I liked as long as it doesn't hurt the salary cap. If we add a long term NBA player this summer, one of those above vets should definitely be removed from the roster.

He has some value as a teacher and role model for Spreights in terms of how to rebound and bang. He isn't essential and I would not be surprised if he was gone.

His energy level was great last year for the team. He really lifts up the team, so i wouldnt get rid of him unless its for a sniper that can gun down 3s and thats about it.

It's another case of the player having more value for our team than anyone else. Like Miller I doubt he would bring back as much as some might think he is worth. There is no way a team will give up a "sharp shooting sniper" for Reggie Evans. He is a nice role player who knows his role and does it well for us.

I hope he has a future here. He is the best role player off the bench the team has had since george lynch. Lynch was even effective as a starter. I think he will be crucial to help work with speights this year and since herbert hill is not a lock to make the team he should be here. Now if he has to be part of a bigger deal to get a real stud starting power forward then so be it. But I say keep him here as long as possible.

are you kidding? not only does he have a future in Philly, but some of us were willing to re-draft him with this year's first round pick if that was possible.

It depends....if EB opts out you can all but kiss him goodbye. He'll be the first option to move to create cap space. I'd give it 50/50 at this point. In the future it will depend on how Speights adn Smith develop. If they can play than there is no room for RE unless one of the two are traded. SO it is a very definitie maybe.

I think Marion is best at the 3, yes he can play both, but so does Young. would he take Thads minutes? Would that 100 percent rule out the possibility of signing a big name? I know Shawn is a big name himself but Would he be in our plans or just a rental?

Too many questions

I've stated all along that Marion should be Plan B. Plan A is to still go after the big name FAs in Brand, Smith, or Okafor. If you strike out there, I would then go after Marion because he can and has played the 4 plus he has a large expiring contract. Just because one of the big three FAs don't take our money , it doesn't mean we should sign a lesser player to a big deal. Marion isn't a far drop (if at all) from the likes of Josh Smith and he enables Stefanski to have a lot of freedom in the future.

Personally, I don't see the rush anymore to go out and draft the 3/4 tweener. I would use this year as another experimental year to see what Speights can do. I would split minutes at the 4 between Speights and Evans. If Speights isn't getting it done or doesn't look like he's the real deal, then I'd go for another PF. What we SHOULD do next is get James Jones because we could really use another 3 point shooter on this roster. Next year's lineup should look something like this:

PG: Miller, Lou (two guards who can mix up the tempo) - Miller should eventually be traded for a 5
SG: Iguodala, Lou (risky putting Iguodala at the 2 but it NEEDS to be tried out)
SF: Thaddeus, Jones (3 point specialist) - both are 6'8 - nice size at the 3!
PF: Evans / Speights (banger PF with post moves), Smith (IF Speights turns into Al Jefferson, look out)
C: Sam, Smith (critical area of need - this is where a DeAndre Jordan would have been nice...)

I heard that. I'm a big evans guy. I'd move jason smith to make sure we could keep him. Unless smith improves this year, he should be on the way out and not reggie. We'll have a better idea on alot of these guys future once we have used the cap space to either get a stud pf in free agency or through trade.

Keep Evans. Smith to C behind Daly. I like that better. Smith and Evans together is a good backup combo.

What Reggie Evans provides for a team is something that can be used on ANY team. The toughness, rebounding, and hustle that he brings are always welcome on a team, especially on a young one like ours. I feel that even though we got Speights, he's somewhat raw and I believe Dileo said that we're not expecting him to be ready to contribute this year. Evans can still help our team, and then we can just gauge where we are at the end of the year. I absolutely love what Reggie Evans brings to the table, and I wanted him on the Sixers back in the Iverson days.
