Best of the Best: PF

Post#1 » by The Guilty Party » Mon Aug 18, 2008 1:36 pm

Things are slow and so I figured it's time for a fun thread. I've listed TEN players at the position in question in the poll above and your task is simple; pick the two who you think are the best.

I'll update the other positions every couple of days and by the end, we'll have the Sixers' Board All-NBA Team and Second Team based on how the voting turns out.

***********

Two years, this was a no-brainer with Duncan and Garnett running away with this. Right now, I think they will both end up with the top 2 spots but because of their ages, I could see some picking some of the other guys who are just entering their prime. I'm also curious as to who gets the most votes here.

So far, the ALL-NBA Sixers' Board Team looks like this:

FIRST-TEAM
PG: Chris Paul
SG: Kobe Bryant
SF: LeBron James
PF: ????
C: ????

SECOND TEAM
PG: Deron Williams
SG: Dwyane Wade
SF: Paul Pierce
PF: ????
C: ????

This is definitely going to be the closest poll.

And is Tim Duncan even a PF right now? He was listed as a C last year.

If Duncan is still predominantly listed as a PF, he's in my top 2, otherwise KG is 1st and Dirk as 2nd...

Brand could vie for 2nd best if he's back to 100%...

Easily Duncan and Garnett. Duncan might be the best PF ever.

Duncan/Garnett with Elton Brand at a close 3rd. It's not Brand's fault that the Clippers sucked arse HARD. Elton Brand had very much a similar game in terms of offense and defense production with Duncan/Garnett. Infact, he's one of only 4 active career 20/10 guys. The others being

Shaq
Duncan
Garnett
and our beloved Brand Name.

Who listed him as a C? I think he has started less than 20 games total IN HIS CAREER at C.

Sure he will play some minutes there during games, but I usually look at the position guys start games at to determine what their primary position is. Oberto and Kurt Thomas (after they acquired him) started probably 95% of the games at C for the Spurs last year. Before Oberto, it was guys like Elson and Nesterovic that started nearly every game at C for the Spurs.

From what I understand, Duncan does not like to be looked at as a C. Very similar to Jermaine O'Neal who for some reason never wanted to be classified as a C (a few years back, Pacers even went to the extent of listing Al Harrington as the starting C despite him being so undersized for the position).

I agree as well. They are the 3 most complete PF's on the list. Dirk, Amare, Gasol, Boozer, Jefferson and West are all pretty poor defenders for the position. Some of them give good effort, but that can only take you so far. Guys like Boozer, Jefferson and Amare can be scored on at will....they are significantly lower on the list IMO due to a major lack of skills on that side of the ball.

It is hard to go against KG and TD, but they will be passed in a couple of years.

It's pretty close between TD and KG. I'm a little shocked to see so many votes for the others on this. I think the center position could be close as well between Yao and Howard.

Duncan is 1 and Garnett is 1A. Big difference is that both of them can help you get a lead in the first three quarters, but Garnett can't consistently throw a team on his back and carry them to a win down the stretch. It is not that GArnett chokes, but he plays full-out all the time. Closers like Jordan, Duncan, Kobe have an extra gear they kick it into down the stretch. Garnett may be the greatest complimentary player of all time (non-PG division).

Damn.... all tied up. Any ideas for a tie-breaker?

EDIT: In this case... I'll let championships determine 1st and 2nd team since we remain tied.
