Nets/Sixers analysis

Post#1 » by Dedicated_76ers_fan » Thu Oct 23, 2008 2:54 am

About a day after Geiger complained about the starters playing significant minutes, Mo Cheeks appears to have grown psychic as the final pre-season game was about the young kids. But it also had some telling stuff about the vets as well.

Elton Brand: It gets concerning when your shot gets blocked 3 times! Seriously, your performing like a slightly better Reggie Evans and that's not what we signed to an 82 million dollar deal.

Kareem Rush: You FINALLY had your break out game. A Long time coming too. 12 pts, 4 AST, 3 Rebs on 3-3 from 3.

Donyell Marshall: Sure, you went 2-7 from 3 but at least you hit 2 three's. Keep hitting 1-3 3's a game and that will boost us big time come the playoffs. 2 Steals. Man, do you play the passing lanes?

Willie Green: You played like you were back in 2005. You know. When you were driving the ball? Making shots AND making plays for other team-mates. 7 Assists. Wow. I don't expect 7 every game. But give me 4.5, and you could find yourself in Philly long term.

Royal Ivey:Nice. I don't expect it. But whatever you did. It's a welcome addition. 8 attempts at the line.

And now for the beastly young kids:

Thaddeus Young: Keep it up man, keep it up. 6-9 from the field for 16 pts, 3 assists. Many will complain about your rebounds. But I realize that that is because your playing on the wings. And your not as able to get those rebounds from out there. Give us 3 to 4 rebound a game and I'm pretty satisfied.

Marresse Speights: Speights, your a MONSTER( in a good way) 18 pts, 7 rebs, 2 blks. Mo. I know it was New Jersey. But I actually like NJ'S Front court depth. It's a year or two from maturation but still. Play this kid. He's alot better then Evans offensively. He'll learn the game ON the floor, not in practice. Speights-Brand is gonna be a dangerous 1-2 punch that no one will expect in midseason.
Easily, the other rookie besides Rose and Beasley that's NBA ready.

LOOOOOU: It's not like your game where you put up an Andre Iguodala-like stat sheet. But it's not bad either. 5-6 from 3(Key here). 4 free throws is okay.

Iggy: Those 6 turnovers made you look like Louis Williams. But as long as you shoot like that from 3, it's acceptable.

PS: I really think Mo needs to talk with Brand and ask Brand what they can do to help him. He's either lost, not confident or hurting somewhere. This is uncharacteristic for him.

Well last nights game I don't think anyone really gave it their all. Especially in the first quarter. Looked like they were trying not to get hurt. Only quarter that it appreared we really tried was the third, where our starters actually looked good..

Now about tonight. I followed most of this game on espn gamecast. No Miller, Daly, limited action for Brand.. I think we really have to consider giving Rush more minutes this season. He's taller, a better shooter and about equal on defense as compared to Green. Speights continues to impress.. He is making it impossible for Cheeks to sit him. Lou is Lou, Ivey seemed to be ok, Evans did his thing.

Of course there is reason to be concerned with Brand, hopefully he can straighten it out by the first month of the season. He seems to have his speed and agility. Hopefully Daly is 100% by the opener as well.

Thats the one thing thats giving me hope. I've heard from a lot of people that Brand looks like he's moving around like the old Brand, and hasn't lost a step. I'm just praying he gets back to becoming a 50% shooter.

I'm honestly not concerned about Brand. The coaches say he looks phenomenal. He's looked bad in some quarters yes, but he looked absolutely great in some others. I think he'll be fine.

Obviously I didn't this one but it seems like Mo wanted to rest his starters (Miller got a DNP while Brand played only 17 minutes). Either way, we're coming out the pre-season looking ok with plenty to improve on. The real news from the pre-season is that Speights is ready to play NOW which means that Evans may find even more of his minutes being cut. Is Speights the first big off of the bench??

Speights is mos def the first big off the bench, but I believe for now that he'll spell Daly.

Boy, Green looks SO much better being the backup to Iggs....and our Reading ol' head still has something left in the tank!

Can't wait for the 29th....

Did anyone actually watch the game? Does anyone know if Speights was matched up against Lopez?

Green actually did pretty well at the point. As a combo guard off the bench, he's a solid player. As a staring SG, he's vastly over matched on most nights.

Brand was terrible and had five fouls. I don't think the intention was to play him 17 minutes, but that's how it turned out.

Iggy again has early turnover problems. Hopefully both he and Brand will be fine when the season starts.

Go Sixers.

A very good post. I have loved Speights game since back in the beginning of January. Mo Joe is showing no fear in handling this kid. That is why you never go by what you hear, It's all about watching the guy play. It's obvious Speights has a serious game.

I am loooking for Willie Green to rack upthe 2nd stringers on other teams and build confidence with the 2nd unit with his relaxed style of play.

Elton Brand- Their is a table out there. You have to put something on the table beside your name. It's time to go to work,Elton. Right now he looks like one of the worst players on the team. I assume that will change next week.
