But he is a pretty good rotation player, way better then most of our guards. And those guys from Toronto don't impress me at all.
So if you aren't willing to give him a long term contract, you are just trading him for this year and letting him walk? This would be really poor from a success cycle perspective.
If you are intending to sign him, you're reducing our options for free agency over the next few years. With Embiid and Simmons, our team is going to start looking attractive for free agents over the next few summers. It would be a shame if we weren't able to make a play for a top 30 player because we had Jeff Teague locked up.
Furthermore, what do you like about Teague specifically? From my experience, the people that wanted us to trade for him have a really shallow understanding of his skillset and how he would affect our team situation. They like him because they've heard of him and know he made an All Star team. Then you see arguments that he'd be "a pretty good rotation player, way better than most of our guards." He'd need to be significantly better than that to be worth both the immediate and long-term investment.
Powell and Wright both have potential to be good rotation players as well. They're both young with upside, addressing current needs while not limiting future options. Powell has solid 3 and D upside (though I'm wary about his shooting being overrated) and would give us another wing prospect we badly need. Wright is hurt now but would be a significant upgrade over TJ. Analytics liked him as a prospect as he gets to the line a lot and shoots well there. He should be a plus defender and his free throw % indicates some shooting upside.
Edit: Powell and Wright both have multiple years remaining of team control. Both are on extremely cheap deals with team options and we'd have RFA rights.
