Having a fetish for wings in 2025 is like having a fetish for bigs in 2013.
It’s outdated thinking that ignores where the game is headed.
High skilled bigs that allows you to play double bigs
2-3 and maybe even 4 guard units.
To further my point.. I’m not saying there’s zero need for wings. Just like in 2013, there wasn’t zero need for bigs. But the trend has shifted. We’ve reached the “Tower of Babel” era for wings, where teams were giving up four 1st round picks just to get one. Asking value for DFS reached 2 first round picks.
The key difference now is that the league allows much more physicality on the perimeter. That shift has empowered 6’4”–6’6” guards to offer as much defensive value as wings, while generally providing more offensively. They can defend bigger opponents, pressure the ball full court, bring it up themselves, handle better under pressure, pass more effectively, shoot more consistently and attack 1-5 PnR better.
As a result, teams are playing more guards. And once you’re playing multiple guards, the situations where you have to play double bigs start to increase. But to make double-big lineups work in today’s game, both bigs need to be highly skilled, ideally with shooting range, otherwise the offense becomes clunky.
