No... you absolutely don't want Covington against those guys... maybe 5 years ago. But not now. You want Covington to play roamer and help defense which he's ABSOLUTELY ELITE at. You don't want to stick him on the perimeter and have him guard another team's better players. I just watch him all year struggle against top perimeter threats and get moved into a more help/disruption role about 1/4 of the way through the season and shine there.
I don't want to stick Tobias Harris on the top perimeter threats either. So now... I still don't have anyone to stick on top perimeter threats and I have one guy who is elite as a disrupter who can't effectively play that role because another guy is taking up that space.
Shame about Roco... We saw it first hand when he got absolutely torched by a rookie wing in an embarrassing 5 game series loss.
I get the fascination about Ben with Portland fans then, in theory he is the cream of the crop when it comes to man defending. He's a specimen, a generational defender. He can stick with any forward or wing. He can smother little guards. He had Trae shooting bunk percentages in the playoffs, can clamp Lebron, Luka Doncic etc. Tobias certainly isn't bad on that end, but he isn't changing the structure of a defense.
If CJ is your primary trade chip in upgrading your defense and a Ben trade isn't feasible who would you target?
Two guys I think about... S&T for Lonzo who isn't perfect, but I'll live with RoCo on the taller/bigger wings if I can throw Lonzo and Powell on guards and smaller 3s. And Marcus Smart who I think can guard 1 through 3 effectively.
Portland needs long defenders who have a chance against most 1-3 perimeter players. I don't mind a singular talent burning Portland from 1 position. They have enough offense to overcome that. But Portland needs a point of attack guy and Harris and Covington ain't it. I think both Lonzo and Smart have proven to be good in that role at this point. I like Lonzo because he provides decent offense as well and can run the offense better then Smart.
I love the idea of a Lillard/Ball backcourt. Lonzo is extremely quick at 6'6 and can mark guards and wings. I've seen him play tough defense on guys like Harden and Tatum before. He's awesome in the open court, has great vision and has developed an absolute strap. He would be a great get. A lot of bad teams are going to throw money at him this summer...
I was super into the idea of throwing assets to get him if we traded Ben like rumored mid season to replace that role.
