Re: Sixers Offseason Thread Part 4
Why is it just hitting me now that Embiid is the best player on that team? I think I got lost in the name recognition and the thought of them maybe not leaning on him that hard with his injuries.

I don't know enough about the cap to know if this alone would preclude a KJ Martin balloon contract.

The KJ Martin baloon contract will not be happening. They had to renounce his cap hold to give every last dollar remaining to Caleb Martin.

If we're just going to use the spot for someone like RoCo or Morris, then we should at least try to hit a home run with the pick.
Didn't he tear his ACL? Normal recovery time is like a year. I don't think the Sixers would have any interest in wasting a roster spot on someone who just sits for likely 50-75% of the season at best. He likely won't even be playing until after the All-star break/trade deadline and then you have to figure out mid/late season how to integrate him into the team. I just don't see it. I like him as a player, but I can't imagine would sign him just to see if maybe he can play at a high level coming off major injury late in the season.
Surgery for his torn ACL was March 28th. A optimistic/speedy recovery puts him on track for a late January return. In the best case scenario that’s not the worst timeline. He could be started off slow and play his way into the rotation by the beginning of April. Fully integrated to the team by the time the playoffs start.
But of course that’s best case scenario and he might not be able to fully return until April and its essentially too late.
10 month recovery from an ACL isn’t crazy for an NFL player, but I feel like it doesn’t happen enough in the NBA to have a great feel for it.
Yes, that's exactly my point. It's usually a minimum of 9 months and it's usually up to a full year. You don't bring somebody onto the team in April and expect them to just jump in for the playoffs coming off major injury, it's more than likely a waste of money and more importantly roster space. Plus by then who knows what the team has actually become or what it even looks like? He's more likely to either go back to the Hawks or literally just sit in FA limbo until he's actually recovered before someone from a new team signs him to rehab all year.

Re: Sixers Offseason Thread Part 4
I thought it was surprising that the Caleb Martin camp couldn't at least extract basically all of the Sixers free space (except for renouncing KJ Martin). So the contract being 4/35 makes more sense. And I'll bet the incentives are reasonable.

Assuming this balloon payment idea actually happens, the amount he gets could give us a hint about who specifically they are looking at. God, we're such dorks!

Very likely zero. The remaining moves are to finalize the reported deals (allowed over the cap for various reasons), sign some minimum contracts (allowed over the cap), and presumably re-sign KJ Martin (because we have his "bird rights", which allows for significant over the cap spending).
The expectation is that we will sign KJ Martin to a big contract to better facilitate salary-matching in a trade later in the year. Exactly how much that contract will be is unclear, but it seems it could be as much as $15M (I expect less, maybe $6-11M, if it happens at all).

The balloon contract should be around $15m to give us maximum optionality up to the 2nd Apron.

Now we have our own elite wing that goes out of their way to pay homage to Kobe Bryant. Title incoming.
