Who cares if the second and third seasons are guaranteed. We want him around for another 3 seasons.

Likely Morey's plan. Run it back with this group, then either way go after both of those guys and extend Maxey.

Maxey
Springer
Anunoby
Siakam
Embiid

Can probably still re-sign Melton and then use the MLE and our 2024 1st to fill out the roster.

Morey is also going to go hard for Miles Bridges.

No point now since he's a RFA. If Miles keeps his nose clean then we can target him next summer as an UFA.

Yes next season. I thought that was understood. All talk about team improvement and getting to the next level is all about next season. This upcoming season be dammed. /s

Think the problem is that we can't offer a max to a 10 year player if we sign Reed.

Looks like Reed is being poached. Can’t blame him. Now for the obvious breakout season with more playing time. Motor, athleticism, efficiency, competes well

Do we ever learn? lmao

I'm curious where the playing time will be. Contending with:

John Collins
Lauri Markkanen
Kelly Olynyk
Taylor Hendricks
Walker Kessler

They must be planning on making a trade, right? Otherwise this doesn't make sense at all.

But if that's the case, they're going into next season with the worst bench in NBA history and a worse team that already wasn't good enough.

None of what they've done this summer makes any sense whatsoever.

Not surprising. Hopefully showing Harden how little other teams value him helps to ease him back.

And it's hyperbole to claim their bench is that much worse. Assuming we match BBall, our top 7 from last year is back. Niang and Shake swapped out for Beverley and Springer isn't that big a downgrade and could even be a wash depending on how Springer develops.

Niang is going to be a big miss imho. Had the fire, great on court presence when our top 3 are moody emo teenagers lol

He’s the only one on the list that can actually shoot lights out. Embiidism offence gets even worse when there’s no shooters to go to as the release.

I haven’t looked that close, but next season we will have a ton of cap space. We only have Embiid, Tucker, Maxey caphold, and Springer option. How is Paul Reed making a difference?

He doesn't. We'll easily be able to trade Reed w/no problem if required to open up cap. That's not a valid excuse in case the ownership tries it.

Plus I assume Tucker is gone along w/his BFF.

Yeah I think it's if they want to keep him past year 1.

If the idea is really to "punt the year" then you should match too... Why? the Knicks and the Cavs are likely getting better, we can easily get bent in the first round next season, thus Reed's money becomes unguaranteed.

If anything, this signals to me, Harris is tired of competing and is demanding to stay below the tax.

Don’t know the cap situation (do we even call the NBA a capped sport because soft cap is really pushing it with all the loopholes etc).
But the owner outside looking in wants to stay under the tax bracket. Probably the right move too because we are far from looking like a chip winning team

Ainge is a snake oil salesman, I wonder what the first year of Reed’s contract is officially. Probably enough to be gone hence why he signed it in the first place

He’ll probably get double he’s earning than in the Sixers so can’t blame him for taking the offer.

This looks like a domino effect. Ready for post Process/Embiid era to begin.

Seems as if Morey cares for the cap room next year.

The easy answer would be to go ahead and move Harden and Harris for expirings and picks and lose in the first round.

Of course, that requires getting Jo on board.

As a bonus, we don't have to watch a team with Harden and Harris on it.

As said, the plan for the offseason is to avoid tax.

Makes sense. But I don’t think they are getting anybody either way. Seems like Morey backed himself into a corner and this cap space idea is to keep fans off his back as he works his profile as eccentric genius planner. In reality, next free-agent class isn’t going to get us anybody.

Going from the report well most likely be in the tax anyway. Going from estimates not matching saves the owner upwards of 10-15 million including repeater tax the year after

Uber rich don’t get Uber rich by wasting on the skim it’s the opposite (use the skim on the top to reimburse/remanouver asset management)

And the way it’s going in the off season the memo is no tax.

Will be surprised if we do match.

I think the plan is always to avoid the repeater tax, so they will always be careful regarding the luxury tax. However, Morey has to be smart enough to plan ahead to avoid boxing himself in with some of these bad contracts. If I were Harris, I wouldn’t pay the tax either. This team isn’t even a top 5 favorite. If I’m paying the tax, build me a team that has a really good shot at a title.

I think the plan was to cross our fingers and hope he has to take the qualifying offer. When it appeared he was going to get a contract offer, they signed Bamba and Harrell to cover themselves. They are ways to match the contract and maneuver out of the tax, but I don’t know if that is happening.
