Re: The Ben Simmons Megathread
I was listening to SI open court podcast by ben golliver.
They talked about having a position in basketball called "unicorn". Which is a cool idea. You'll have some bragging right if your team has one. If you're team doesn't have one, you'll be left with one big hole.
Thinking about it.. If you look at most championship teams, there are mostly unicorns but of different definition. I think a good definition of unicorn is a guy who can defend the position and is big/long enough to dominate that position. Guys like Kobe, Shaq, Hakeem, Pippen, Magic, Wilt, Dirk, LBJ, Jordan and KD all falls into that category. The recent Pistons ship team was also built on length.
Not always but there's some correlation to it and could also explain why its rare for a PG sized player led team to win the ship.

Debating the term "unicorn" feels really silly but I'm pretty sure that the term is supposed to be reserved for someone that both defends the rim on defense and spaces the floor on offense. Or at least someone with a super original player type that we've never seen before. Seems like you are just using unicorn as a stand in for "all time great." Like Kobe is basically a lesser Jordan and we have seen dozens of other imitations.

I had that thought initially. But I could be wrong to say that Jordan and Kobe are SF sized SG because of their wingspan. Like unicorn is when you have above elite length at your position. I know 6'6 w/ 7' wingspan for MJ is just elite, but compared to his competition at SG back then it could be freakish? I could be reaching there admittedly. I just find there is a wide range of length of good SGs. Anyway, if Kobe and MJ arent then there's Pippen and Shaq.

Ok well that's not how it's used. Like Rudy Gobert is probably the longest guy in the league and I don't hear anyone calling him that.
Shaq is pretty clearly a center? The reason why Sharpe and Golliver proposed that label (Well really I think Bill Simmons came up with it) is because you have these guys that don't fit traditional positions. Like how people came up with point forward for someone like Pippen. (I don't know the origin of that one)
I agree with you that length is important, just come up with your own word for it lol.

One of the reasons there's so much riding on Luwawu developing into a worthy starter. Then we can field a clamps line-up in the future of:
Fultz 6'9" wingspan
Luwawu 7' wingspan
Covington 7'2" wingspan
Simmons 7' wingspan
Embiid 7'5" wingspan
Fultz 6'9" wingspan
Luwawu 7' wingspan
Covington 7'2" wingspan
Simmons 7' wingspan
Embiid 7'5" wingspan

Yup. TLC also looks like he has found a consistent stroke from outside. Also is a great cutter off screens

Hopefully we don't need him tonight to beat the Magic. I always hate playing teams on long losing streaks they will win at some point again.

We don't need him tonight, we'll win without him just fine. Need him back for Cleveland though.

Elbow bursitis with treatment usually goes away within 1 to 2 weeks. Thinking Ben should be back in another week or so.

We need him back for Monday against the Cavs!

If he's hurt. Sit him as long as he needs regardless. If he's OK by Monday and this is just precautionary, then let him play.

Actually if you ask me which Center I want for my perfect championship caliber team, I will chose Asik hands down

Is anyone else concerned the amount of minutes Simmons plays? He’s playing like 38 or 39 minutes per game? As much as I love seeing him on the court playing I think he should play no more than 35 minutes until the playoffs if we make it.

He's young and the season is still young. We should rest him at some point.
To some extent, Ben and Biid needs a lot of experience to make up for lost time
Im actually more concerned with Biid. There was one point that I have him being limited during reg season and let him play major mins at playoffs.

From a physical standpoint Embiid was impressive tonight because he was clearly under the weather and sluggish, but he powered through it. I think his fitness is really rounding into form now.

I actually am concerned with him playing not 100%. If you play tired or weak energy, sometimes things like landing and positioning gets compromised.
I thought that chase down attempt on Simmons was a close example. It was a tired guy instinctly trying to make the right play. Sometimes when you're weak or tired, you move unconsciously. A little off in timing and that can translate into an injury or suspension.
Its like doing deadlifts when you are sick. You may be able to lift lighter weights but your form can be compromised that can lead into injuries. I dont know if it makes sense to u
Thats why I was saying how I wouldnt want any alley oop plays for Biid against Magic.

Not if you get a cortisone injection which is what you usually do for bursitis. Then pain usually goes away in 1-2 days.
