Some in Philly won't like this guy because he isn't your blue collar, lunch pail type guy that allegedly fits the Philly stereotype. Too bad, this is a multi-million dollar enterprise he is running, not a road crew.

Exactly. Some people act as though the hiring of Sam Hinkie makes us a rutterless ship with no sense of talent evaluation or basketball knowledge. We've been off the mark for the last 12 years and have struggled to establish a cohesive winning team with an extended window of success. I can't blame management for shaking the cage and changing the culture a bit.

I didn't suggest he is an idiot nor do I care what type of person he is. But if you heard this guy talk yesterday in his presser and the interviews afterwards, you would sit there feeling uneasy too.

why? It seemed like general GM speak..in fact it was a bit better because it didn't seem like the normal optimistic bullhockey our last few GMs have said.

One area in which Hinkie gives me hope is international scouting. The sixers haven't had a lot of luck with foreign players, but I feel like Hinkie will change that.

Now that the Maloofs are set to sell the Kings to Ranadive, I get the feeling that Hinkie may soon have a trading buddy in his (and Morey's) disciple Gersson Rosas in SAC come July 1st.

Cool.

All I know is Hinkie was given permission to interview Kelvin Sampson.

Well, Rockets east begins.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably

Very possible.

A poster over at the HOU board with sources in the Rockets and a few other teams (he broke a few stories before they happen including calling the complicated 4-way Dwight trade before the Woj report) said that HOU top brass wasn't too happy with McHale and was "terrified" that another team would snatch up Kelvin Sampson. Of course, HOU top brass at the time included Hinkie. Ironic that it may end up being Hinkie himself who ultimately pries Sampson away from the Rockets.

I don't know much about Sampson. What kind of coach is he? I don't mind hiring an assistant but at least people like Shaw and Malone have made names for themselves.

From what I hear, he is a strong player development coach and brilliant X-and-Os guy. From what I see of him in action while McHale was out, Sampson is patient, deliberate, and not easily flustered. You see McHale kneejerk after a single turnover and sit a rookie out for the next three games; Sampson will instead pull the same rookie to the side, talk talk talk talk talk, then send him out to "do it right." He is also like the anti-eye-test guy and does not kneejerk easily to move away from playing the odds.

For example, if a player forces a tough shot for an opponent, that's good defense, and he won't adjust to overcompensate just because the offensive player makes a few tough shots in a row as McHale does. The same thing goes for offense. He is not satisfied with players making tough shots. He wants easy shots. A player barely missing a pair of point-blank lay-ins posting up a severely undersized Tobias Harris is not going to stop Sampson from attacking Harris a third time in the post.

A cheating one . . . or at least he was at Indiana according to the NCAA. The rules he broke were kind of silly, but he broke them repeatedly and brought major sanctions against his employer.

People change, but that's part of Sampson's story. I wonder how much weight, if any, Hinkie gives that in his decision-making process.

Wouldn't Sampson DNP Lin for a bunch of random games regardless of the matchup? I mean I know Lin's a relatively average player, but Toney Douglas is terrible and the guy Lin overtook when in NY. Although I do believe Sampson was coaching when Lin had that crazy game against the Spurs

I am ok with a Kelvin Sampson type. They don't need an ego type coach.
