Well Giannis is on the verge of becoming a star and he still can't score outside of 3 feet, so that's a good sign for Simmons.

That article came out with a source saying Simmons was fine with being drafted by Philly yesterday or the day before. Simmons tweeted "Terrible Sources" with the laughing til crying emoticon.

Logical deduction from the timing of that tweet, when he rarely tweets, is that he might indeed prefer to go to LA.

Too bad.

This was already figured out. He was referred to his Nike deal.

It was about the shoe deal and The Vertical's article supposedly 'detailing' it. Simmons liked this tweet about the time he tweeted 'Terrible Sources'. He also then went on to favorite numerous Sixers related tweets as well.

Rich Paul is a smart man. He probably views the Philly market as a sleeping giant for an NBA star. Him, LeBron, and all their friends were Iverson stans growing up, afterall.

Huge sports city with ZERO stars right now. It's a slam dunk if the kid becomes what they project. It might not be LA or NY, but they will cash out.... And Nike will have to have a larger presence in Philly. Nike really doesn't push Philly at all. How is Philly the only major city in America without a NikeTown.

He's longer, but coming into the league Simmons is much more refined, skill wise.

Comparisons don't really work.

Wait. Are my eyes deceiving me? Did I just read that you are leaning Simmons? Didn't you say you would rather have Ingram and thought he was a better prospect as well? Anyway welcome aboard the Simmons train.

Three regular posters that were team Ingram this whole spring have switched to Simmons.

I expect late breakers to continue to switch over, mostly because the most compelling argument for either player is that Simmoms undeniably has the higher ceiling. He has more superstar potential. Red flags or not.

Ultimately, we haven't had the first pick in 20 years, and that was when we drafted the last HOF player in this city, possibly in any sport.

We have to take this chance while we have it.

Philly is a great market for a superstar. Erving, Barkley, and Iverson all became icons of the league here.

It has everything that you would want in a city to play in.

Where he wouldn't want to go would be places like Millwaukee, Sacramento, Minnesota, etc...

So he has better than adequate speed and quickness to play the 3, but that doesn't give him an advantage at the 4? Does he have the size, speed, quickness, and skills to outmaneuver most of the players that you listed? Believe there's a very high likelihood that he does.

I don't.

Good defense doesn't require as much physical talent as great offense. You can be a bit slower, and still be a great defender if you are efficient with your steps, have a good wingspan, are strong, and have good defensive instincts. The only place where lack of speed really gets exposed is when you have to chase a guy around the court, especially around screens - but that generally only comes into play when defending shooters like Klay or Curry or Korver.

So, defensively, I think Simmons is more than fast enough to defend Lebron, Durant, Melo, George, Wiggins (when he plays the 3 rather than 2), or even chase Korver around screens. He can defend the 3.

Offensively, Speed helps a lot in transition, but transition play is something like 10-20% of a basketball game. In the half court, speed is less of an issue as compared to quickness and first step, unless you are a Klay or Korver and running around a bunch of screens and picks. Simmons has a good but not elite first step. But without a consistent shot to force defender to guard him at the 3, and with zone allowed in the NBA, I don't see him being able to "outquick" the defense of Ibala, Favors, Faried, Milsap, Anthony Davis, KAT (when at the 4), etc. etc. I don't know that he'll be able to outquick the slower guys, even, since they can sag. There's no matchup advantage - he's not so much quicker than the guys who would guard him as a 4 to blow by them, especially since, right now, they wouldn't have to extend the defense to guard him.

Simmons has to be a 3 to have a real chance at being a "superstar." His shooting issues would have to be offset by a 4 who can really shoot. And he'd have to really work on his shot.

BTW, him being a "tweener" 3/4 means the same thing - he'd need to be next to a guy who can force 4's to defend him (who has enough size) but can also shoot. Then he gets a matchup advantage because he's just bigger than most of the 3's who would defend him.

As a 4, he doesn't give you any real mismatch advantages against most opponents, with any speed advantage over plodders like Z-Bo or Scola or Love undone by his lack of shooting.

If he can't play SF... then he's a pretty terrible prospect for a #1 overall pick.

It's the other way around. He'll have a quickness/athletcisim advantage against most PFs to break them down off the dribble. It's the same reason why Odom, Josh Smith, Thad Young, etc. are all better suited to play PF. Sure Simmons is expected to be better than those guys but the point still stands.

His lack of shooting is even more of a problem at SF. SFs will stay in front of Simmons and won't allow him to get to where he wants to go. What good will his size/strength advantage be then? Do you expect him to play in the post as a SF, with two other big men on the court with him?

Odom, Josh Smith and Thad Young are 3 very different players, and Odom was only better at the 4 later in his career. A lot of Odom and Smith's being "better at the 4" was because of their lack of shooting and no true stretch 4 next to them, ever. Also, Odom played a lot of his time in the pre-zone era (rule technically changed for 01-02, but took several years for it to catch on), which makes a huge impact. Odom also never had a particularly good first step, so he never was really able to use his size advantage.

Smith is kind of similar to Odom in that he's more a 4 now later in his career, but was able to play both positions when younger - fast enough for the 3, big and strong enough for the 4. Like Odom, he's slowed down a touch. Unlike Simmons, Smith doesn't have a particularly good handle (which impacts his ability to leverage his size), or passing ability.

Young is kind of a "bad tweener" - he's really undersized at the 4 and needs to be covered for in a lot of matchups. At the same time, he lacked both the ball handling and shooting to be effective on offense at the 3, although he was fine defensively.

None of these guys are close to "transcendent" though - not near superstars.

Draymond Green is undersized but uses his strength and quickness advantage - but a lot of that quickness advantage is set up by his 3 point shot, which forces defenders to come out to him. And a lot of the advantage isn't really against 4's so much as 5's in the W's small ball lineup.

Charles was undersized, but exceptionally quick and with an exceptionally versatile offensive game - reminds me of Melo when he's at the 4, but more inside oriented and more physical. Except Charles was tougher. Then again, that was pre-zone, too.

First off, I still think Ingram is a very good prospect. It's not hard to see him having upside of a Paul George. Again, his length is elite, he can make plays off the dribble, he is a good 3pt shooter and is mobile, these traits are valuable and can easily translate into this positionless era.

I'm leaning towards Simmons because of one simple question. How good can he be if he develops his jumper? Two guys who I think has better information than most fans or analysts are Chad Ford and Brett Brown, both guys seems to be optimistic with his jumper. While defensively, I do think he can play 3 (I really don't like him at PF) with his quickness to stay with them on D and skillset on offense. If Simmons develops his jumper, it's not hard to see him being a high level star or superstar SF.

And looking at a team building perspective, it's easier to build with simmons not relative to fit of the bigs but relative to the bigs as assets. Simmons is a guy a team like the Lakers need. He's a type of player disgruntled stars would want to play for. And guess what? We'll have the cap space and the assets to bring Jerry Colanglo's dream team in Philly.

Some Simmons work out info:

His routine is the same every day. He gets up in the morning and heads to the gym, where he's spending time putting up shots, doing ball-handling drills, working on his transition game and change of pace -- the whole works.

The workout I saw in Cleveland looked like the drills most teams put guards through. That Simmons looked comfortable in that setting explains his appeal as the No. 1 pick in the draft. Guys who are 6-foot-10, 240 pounds, move as effortlessly as he does on the court and are as comfortable as he is with the ball just don't come along ... really, ever.

Simmons' jump shot has been the major source of concern about his game. But the indications are, while he's no Kevin Durant, his jumper is not broken.

He shot just three 3s all season at LSU. I saw him get up roughly 100 NBA 3s in the workout. His outside shot is getting better -- or maybe it was solid all along, and he just seldom used it.

...

"The one thing that almost always gets better from college to the pros is a guy's jumper," one NBA GM told me Tuesday. "It's a fixable problem, and frankly, I'm not sure how much of a problem it really is. LeBron [James] couldn't shoot when he came out. Lots of guys couldn't. They get better."

After the morning gym workout, Simmons headed to the weight room, primarily to work on his core and do pool workouts. He has added muscle, and his body is lean, chiseled and explosive.

Then he was back in the gym in the afternoon -- and one more time at night. Three-a-days for the first month, then two-a-days the past month. On the weekends, he's got yoga, boxing and Pilates for balance and focus.

Simmons' work ethic the past two months has been extraordinary. It's a counter-narrative to whispers in the media that Simmons didn't care at LSU, isn't competitive or doesn't want it badly enough. Everything I saw on the court looked like a player who doesn't just want to be the No. 1 pick -- he wants to be great.

"Being the No. 1 guy, they're going to put that target on your back," Simmons said. "But you've got to be prepared for it. It comes with the territory. ... There's always going to be talk about who should be 1 or 2 in the draft. But my focus is just getting ready for the next level. I'm not worried who goes where."

Simmons seems unconcerned about where he goes. His agent has yet to commit to his working out anywhere, including Philadelphia and Los Angeles. It likely won't matter. Sources say the Sixers are strongly leaning toward taking Simmons No. 1. If they don't, the Lakers will jump on him at No. 2.

...

"It's an 82-game season. You have to prepare for that," he said. "I'm worried about playing against Paul George, Kevin Durant and LeBron James next season. Once you get drafted, you're at the bottom. You have to start all over again. People don't care where you were drafted. They just care whether you can play.

"This is my job now. This is the main focus for me. I have to come in every day and put the work in. This is a great job. I love doing it. Every day, the goal is to get better."

Odom was 23 the last time he played SF. Smith was 20 (not counting the 2014 Pistons disaster). Both have played the vast majority of their careers at PF. Odom, Smith, and Young are different players who played better at PF for similar reasons. Lack of shooting less of a disadvantage at PF, quickness/athleticism more of an advantage at PF.

Forget the other names. Like I said, how do you expect Simmons to use size to his advantage at SF? Play in the post while the PF is out on the perimeter? So basically, he would be playing the role of PF...Also, you should realize that in this scenario, if defenses think their PF would do a better job on Simmons, which you also seem to think, then they will defend Simmons with their PF.

Great read, thanks for posting! Based on the comment I've bolded, I wonder if Simmons sees himself as a 3? I know many of us discuss his position, and it'd be interesting to hear what he thinks he will be in the NBA.

I think it was in David Locke's interview where Chad also talked about how impressed he was with Simmons' improve physique and he shows no concern with his shot. Yeah, it seems like he sees himself as a 3 against PG, KD and LBJ.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

Simmons could literally be position-less.

If his jumper becomes a legit weapon (which I believe it will) He will literally be able to possibly play any of the 5 positions in the NBA.

He can handle the ball and setup teammates like a PG. Has the foot speed to guard wings and the size/strength to guard bigs.

He has some developing to do sure, and some questions to answer....but if he can put it all together he can be a special, special player.
