Basically they hope that certain cells in the bone marrow help the healing process. The fracture site in a Jones fracture is tricky because it doesn't naturally get a lot of blood flow. So this is an attempt to directly inject blood into the area. And marrow is thought to have even better healing properties than regular blood.
I assume if this doesn't work, then in another month or two he'll get another surgery, which will be a bone graft.
Yeah from what I know about Bone marrow procedures is that it helps speed up the process of healing(but not something you do unless its truly needed). Actually may prove that Sixers management is not lying about his foot, and that it simply isnt fully healed. Like you said jones fractures are tricky. Best case scenario is that bone marrow works and in about a month or so, they find that his foot reacted well to it and it has helped the final healing.
Lets hope it helps. Our medical team could sure use something to go right these days.
