This isn't a Noel situation. We need this guy so he has all the leverage.

Re: The Legend of Joel Embiid
Man, If this possible contract situation is true.....It is really opening up a can of worms for the Sixers organization.
On one hand, you have an uber talented player who has all the tools/skills to become one of the best players in the NBA and a championship caliber building block.
On the other, you have a player who has had multiple serious injuries, missed a considerable amount of time and played in just 31 games in 3+ years.
His agent will almost certainly push for a max level deal even though it is based on an extremely small sample and popularity, also knowing his importance to the team.
Could create an unnecessary distraction. I know we all love Embiid and wanna hope/imagine the best, but would it seriously be wise to invest a massive contract into someone with such uncertainty surrounding his health? This is the NBA, where a bad contract can cripple a team for multiple years. Going to be interesting to see how this unravels in the coming months.

I assume the Sixers are prepared for this. It wasn't exactly unforeseeable.
Then again anyone could have told you that keeping all 3 centers into last year had a high chance of developing into a situation and it seemed like Noel popping off blindsided them. So who knows.

We are at the point where you try and work a deal with the agent with some incentives. If he rejects it, you pay him the money and live with the results. We are still at a stage where he doesn't kill us if he only plays 50-60 games because of the young roster. Simmons and Fultz allow you to take the risk. In my opinion there is no need to create ill will with a possible generational player.

If he averages around 35 ish games this season ( like last year) would you guys still max him out because of his potential?
Bet with Stillwater Celtics will finish 6th or higher in ECF Standings Regular Season(17-18). [WON]

Would be nice for Joel to nip it in the bud too. Just a 1 line tweet saying "All is ok he is just having a break" would be fantastic. We know he isn't shy of social media.

Is there a record for least number of games played before a player got a max contract? Cause I'm pretty sure Biid would get it if we signed him for max.

Re: The Legend of Joel Embiid
Agents push for the best offers that they can get. That's what they do.
The question is what makes the most sense. I would sign Embiid today for a huge deal that is less than the max, and would happily give him the full max next year if he has another season with no stress fractures.
My prediction is that the Sixers offer, and Embiid accepts a sub max deal in the next few weeks. His next contract will be a super max if he is healthy anyway.

Injury concerns and all, thank goodness the 76ers got the #3 pick in 2014. I'd rather have the worry of paying Embiid a max contract then being forced to pay Andrew Wiggins 140 million for God knows whatever he does.

and twolves fans will tell you they're glad to pay the max to a guy that they know is playing. I would love to rid myself of this daily Embiid anxiety. But it's always going to be there, which is going to effect our fanhood and how we enjoy rooting for this team.

Getting stuck paying a bad player 35 million be per year is as bad as paying an injured player. And worse, they'll spend the next 5 years trying to justify it. The T'Wolves will be sunk, the minute they ink that deal.

I don't think that we will be stuck with Embiid anxiety in perpetuity. The real anxiety comes from the very real and scary fear of navicular injuries. If he gets through his first few years with no re-occurrences of those kinds of injuries then we will reach a point where he has a typical big man's health concerns.
Do people today think of Brook Lopez as an injury risk? He had recurrent foot injuries. These guys can flame out, or get passed them.
I haven't allowed myself to really think of us as having the next Hakeem yet because I'm still afraid of his stress fractures. If we get through this year cleanly then I know that I will start to feel more relieved about this.

It could allay be worse we could have picked a healthy Jabari Parker in 2014. Where do we go from there?

Re: The Legend of Joel Embiid
All I want is for this dude to be healthy. I'm in the camp that thinks we have a surefire future top 10 player in Simmons, and Embiid has shown he can be that too. His health will determine if we're the next Blazers or Thunder...
2025-2026 Philadelphia 76ers:
Maxey/McCain/Lowry
Edgecombe/Grimes/Gordon
George/Oubre/Edwards
Barlow/Watford/Walker
Embiid/Drummond/Bona/Broome

I feel the same way about Simmons, but if Embiid flames out we are still in much better shape than the Blazers because they lost both of their stars. We would still have Simmons, and a shot for something else good with Fultz.
I think Simmons is going to be a Westbrook level player in his own right, yet a Westbrook level player that is easier to play with than the actual Westbrook.

Isn't the obvious answer a contract that has incentive for health. If he's available for >70 games, then max, and so on.

Re: The Legend of Joel Embiid
Pretty sure that's not legal in the NBA, and Embiid wouldn't sign it anyway. (Someone will give him big money w/o these crazy strings). You can only give incentives for positive achievements-- making all-NBA, averaging a double double, etc.bball4life wrote:Isn't the obvious answer a contract that has incentive for health. Our only real leverage with him today is that he may take a sub Max deal today as a hedge against his health for himself. If he has a healthy year this year he is clearly worth a max deal.
He can take the risk of waiting until next year, but it will be hard to turn down 90 million today, or whatever sub Max amount that we offered.
If I were him I would take the big deal now, and then know that, if good health follows that he will get a huge deal next time. Take the bird in the hand today Joel!
