That’s an interesting perspective. Haven’t heard that before.

Think you're underselling Maxeys scoring ability. At one point he was averaging over 28 ppg last season.76ciology wrote:To me, the biggest indicator that defines the failure of Edgecombe’s archetype is the combination of poor 3pt shooting and a low FT rate. That’s why Zhaire and Jaden failed. But if you improve on both, you atleast open the door to a career path similar to Jrue Holiday or Eric Bledsoe, who put up multiple seasons of 20-4-6 coinciding with his peak 3pt made and FT/g with strong defensive impact and 2 stocks per game.
I think Maxey and Grimes (and maybe McCain) would be great mentors for VJ. Neither was highly regarded as a scorer early on, Grimes was seen as just a 3&D guard, and Maxey was a sixth man with a limited offensive bag. But both put in the work and developed enough to become 20ppg or atleast 20ppg threats.

VJ wasn’t drafted because of his character, he was picked because he was the best player available on both timelines. Like I’ve said, the only way he fails is if his 3pt shooting doesn’t translate and he doesn’t get to the line at a high rate, which would be inconsistent with what he showed at Baylor. At worst, he profiles as a 20-5-5 player with 2 stocks like Jrue and Bledsoe at their peak. And at the same age, he’s already ahead of both guys. If you look at his trajectory, he right there with players like Oladipo, Wade, and Mitchell, it really just comes down to his work ethic from here.
And Ace was passed up because he’s one of the weakest top 3 prospects in recent memory.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

My point is, Maxey was originally projected to be just a sixth man with a limited offensive bag, but he worked and made a huge leap to become what he is now. That should be inspiring for VJ, who’s already a better player with a deeper bag than Maxey had at the same age.

Yeah, it would’ve been great to draft a player with worse statistical indicators who played on a losing team with an inner circle that generates constant tabloid-style drama. A real no brainer because how could you pass up on that “upside.”

Eh, I'm not jazzed about the VJ pick and don't love him as a prospect but this is a fake way of framing it. VJ wasn't a good prospect because he's a 'blue collar high character' guy and Ace wasn't rejected because he's the opposite. Both of them were top-5 HS prospects coming into the year, and VJ produced as much as Ace for a much better team. He's also a legitimately big upside athlete who has a better and more complete overall skillset than Ace.
I sort of get why people think Ace has mega upside but I also wonder if that's more of an idea that's being tossed around than anything else. He’s bad at a lot of stuff and wasn’t that good at his main standout skill (shooting), and he needs a lot to go right for him to be good. The attitude and immaturity stuff is closer to a tie breaker.

It's probably just to help him develop his on ball skills because he doesn't really project as a PG.

I see him as a combo guard. In today’s NBA, you need multiple players with the ability to create. Maxey, McCain, and Embiid (When healthy) can do that for us. If VJ continues to hone his craft I see no reason he can’t. Awesome speed / quickness to beat his man to the hoop.

Re: Welcome V.J. Edgecombe
Isn’t that what we’d all have him working on anyway? Ball handling, shooting off the dribble, and playmaking are all good areas for him to focus on.

Re: Welcome V.J. Edgecombe
VJ thinking he's a PG is not a big deal. He's not going to make a big fuss about half-court touches and he's willing to shoot the ball. This isn't Ben Simmons, a guy with a huge ego who isn't willing to work on the things required to play the position effectively.

Re: Welcome V.J. Edgecombe
I would love to watch him play PG in Summer league. I want to watch his ball handling, passing, and finishing at the rim in summer league. I'm already confident in his defense and transition game. It would be nice to see his 3 point shooting as well, but I'm less concerned about that.

Yea , it just means he's going to put in the work to hone in on those skills. Skills that could take him from a good role play to an good to great starter.

Skills that he will acquire over a very long career. Skills that will make him a nightmare for opposing teams.
