Re: Pelicans and Sixers in talks for Okafor
I'm starting to think that we all but know Jrue is coming here. The reason we would make the move for him is because we already know he will resign and that we can sign someone else first then go over the cap for jrue.

Is that true? Is that a recent change or has it always been that way?

I'd rather not get Jrue. I also don't particularly want to sign him in the offseason. Will be too expensive and too many health concerns for, what I hope to be, an eventual back up PG.

With Jrue, health is the only mitigating factor. He plays both sides of the ball pretty damn well almost right under an all-star level when healthy. I'll take it.

yeah Mmmmkay...backup....gotcha.
Even if we draft a rookie PG it would take a minimum of 2 years for him to be better than Jrue, who could also start at the 2. I don't get the "why would we want any FA if we draft monk/ball" club.

So, if we draft Fultz or Ball, you're expecting Jrue to be starting ahead of them? Or are we not going to draft a PG because we will have signed an injury prone PG?

Do you not think that 2 guards who are both above 6'4 (Fultz/Jrue, Ball/Jrue) and possess the ability to play off ball could start in the backcourt together?

Re: Pelicans and Sixers in talks for Okafor
We should get NO's 2018 draft pick just for taking Omer Asik's contract $9M this year (prorated), and $10.5M ('17-18), and $11M ('18-19), and $3M ('19-20 buyout). That's 30+M for someone not in the rotation.
Sixers got OKC15(x18), which turned into OKC16(#24), for taking on Javale McGee $12M at the deadline and $12M the following year.
Sixers got Nik Stauskas, two years of swap rights, and SAC19, for taking on Carl Landry and Jason Thompson's $13M at the deadline and $13M the following year.
Even if you include Stauskas as part of the dump (instead of compensation for the dump), the Sixers got two years of swap rights and an unprotected first round pick for saving the Kings $32M.
New Orleans is nuts if they think they're getting Okafor and $30M cap relief for a 2018 pick that will likely be in the teens.

and this is where we miss Hinkie. Although this all would have been moot since Okafor wouldve been gone for the BKN pick this time last year.

Re: Pelicans and Sixers in talks for Okafor
I think I would go holiday, ajinca, and a 2018 pick swap for Jah and Sergio. Then in the offseason you have Jrues bird rights. I then would chase JJ redick, sign him to whatever it costs, then go over the cap to sign jrue.
Jrue/bayless/draft
JJ/draft/sauce
Cov/hendo/tlc
Simmons/saric/vet
Biid/Holmes/vet
In this scenario I would also move Nerlens at the deadline for a pick next year. By the time our rookies are ready bayless, Henderson, and redick are expired.

In a vacuum on a team with a traditional frontcourt? Absolutely.
On this team, where you already have your primary ball-handler at PF and a high usage player at center? They could...It's just not a great fit. Holiday would be #4 in the pecking order of who the offense runs through, eventually if not initially. You're wasting his abilities there. It would make more sense to replace him with a wing who provides better shooting and defense. Not that Holiday is bad in either category, but the #4 and #5 options should ideally be lockdown defenders who shoot a lot of threes - I'm talking a 3PA rate of like 0.5. Holiday is at a career high this year at 0.3 with a career average of 0.23. Someone like Otto Porter, Jae Crowder, Danny Green, etc.

Yes on both counts. BC should be willing to eat even long term deals to maximize return. If he could get a return like that he should eat Asik. That Pellies pick, even next year, would be sweet.
With a salary cap of around 94 mil for 16-17, and an Asik salary of 9, 10, and 11 mil per year is just a little over a MLE salary in the greater scheme of things. It's like getting rid of Kenny Thomas in 2008-10, i.e., it's not that bad if it returns a couple good assets.
It's a major problem because Asik money would be ontop of a Noel extension. So were are looking at around 30 million for two backup centers.
I don't mind trading Okafor for Asik but the picks better be damn enticing. We are talking a very very lightly protected 2017 first, lightly protected 2021 first and pick swaps for 2018 and 2019

Spurs coming to town tomorrow. Pops could be a buyer. (2nd week of his rookie season, OK4 put up great numbers against SA. Pops gushed about him to the local press; then he and Duncan spent the following afternoon with him.)

I agree that keeping Asik would make keeping Noel very difficult, but if we had to, we could take Asik off of their hands for much better draft compensation(whatever that means), and then also trade Noel for something of value in a separate deal. Taking on Asik, and keeping Noel is a non starter to me.
I think that Asik's contract is rough, but he can be a serviceable back up center.

Trading a current asset for Jrue wouldnt make sense right now when we could sign him out right in the offseason if he really wants to be here. But if we dont really have to give up anything of value and can get Jrue, by taking on Asik, id be 100% for it.
I wouldn't. The only way I'm taking on Asik deal is multiple first rounders. If they want Okafor fine we are probably talking multiple first rounders with some pick swaps included. I wouldn't know how to even formulate the offer considering the amount of money we'd be saving the Pelicans. Probably close to 60 million. Consider Okafor contract and Asik. I'd probably want at least two first rounders and two pick swaps. With the first rounders being very lightly protected if at all
A straight up Okafor trade is simple their 2017 first round pick top three protected. Considering how bunched the standings are there needs to be some upside for us. They could still make the playoffs. They are only 3.5 games back from 8th.
That is an absolutely ridiculous expectation.
Our upside is getting rid of Jahlil Okafor.
It's basically the return we received for MCW actually a bit less because the NOP are only 3.5 games out of a playoff spot versus the lakers whom were awful at the time of the trade and had no chance to jump in the standings. I think MCW had basically two plus one years left on his deal too.
I've always felt in these type of deals there needs to be upside for the pick otherwise just do a draft day trade in the offseason where you have a better idea where things will stand. It isn't a very deep draft regarding bigs next year either.
I'd also rather have a mid-range first round pick in next years draft then the pick carry over because NOP put a ton of protection on it.

I agree. If Asik is part of the deal, I would expect a follow up move where Noel is shipped out for something of value.
I don't mind Embiid/Saric starting with Asik/Holmes off the bench. Holmes can stretch the floor a bit for Asik, and Asik can rebound better than Holmes, while Holmes is a better rim protector. But only take Asik if the return warrants it. And then try to move Noel for a guard.

Not sure if this was posted, but saw this on hoopshype:
Instead?!
The 76ers, according to a source, were not as enamored with the Pelicans offer as maybe it seemed. Sources close to the situation are saying the 76ers wanted guard Jrue Holiday in an Okafor deal instead of the draft pick. Both sides are said to be continuing the dialogue, and now that the talks are out in the open, there will be some urgency to either complete the deal or move on. 4 hours ago – via Basketball Insiders
