It's nice to see that this ownership is thinking. They hired a GM first. He is the boss. They got rid of Collins. His style didn't work. Let the GM hire his coach. And get out of the way. We are years away from contending. Pick a few good players and sign a franchise guy. No retread coaches please. This franchise has been lost for ten years. When Larry Brown left. This franchise has never recovered. Bad signing after bad signing. Bad drafts. I think we all know what this franchise needs. A smart guy at the top.

Exactly.

Look at all the bad coaching decisions over the years.
Since brown left they were all either retreads or "local" guys with ties to the area or GM (Princeton offense/Stiff)

Hopefully this is the start of brighter days ahead.

this looks really good. I think every die hard on this forum is in favor of 1. analytics and 2. stealing from the best and the brightest. The ownership did both in one fell swoop.

There is no conceivable way that Spencer Hawes or Evan Turner are back with this next year. Not with a numbers guy.

Edit: Holy **** guys! I just realized that with a smart person behind the wheel we might tank next year! Ender Wiggins here we come.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably

Sounds like a great hire.
Given that there were rumors that the Rockets were getting ready to make a big offer to Bynum this offseason does this mean we work hard to keep him?

I think this move is overrated. The fact that they now got a superstar in Harden is making everyone forget how mediocre and irrelevant they were. They were us of the west.

Its about getting a guy who appreciates advanced statistics versus being stuck in the past.
I think the rockets have been pretty solid overall. Beyond the Harden trade (masterfully done) the rockets did get thomas robinson for nothing, wisely structured salaries to land Asik and Lin (not a fan of his). Also they value the draft and amass picks either to use them or to trade them. I don't know whats not to like here.

he is being hired as the GM... some fans might like the fact that they Acquired a superstar and didn't get lucky in the draft..also being 8th or 9th in the West has been a tad tougher than the East

While I agree they weren't contenders in the west, they would have made the playoffs every year in the east.
They won 50+ games in 06-07,07-08,08-09. Then they won no less than 42 games from then untill now except in the lockout year where they went 34-32.

I agree after the TMac/Yao years they were pretty average, but they were still better off than us, won more than us and stayed flexible enough while adding young assets (a long term vision) to jump on harden when he became available.

Acquiring a star is pretty much what it's all about. And he helped accomplish that goal in Houston.

OHHHHHHHHHHHH HELLLLLLLLLLLLL YEAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great hire. He's the basketball version of a sabermetrics guru. In the NBA with the current salary situation, you need to get the most bang for your buck as possible. So Hinkie is most definitely gonna be after guys with high PER and win shares.

They also got the most valuable contract in the entire NBA, Chandler Parsons. A nice rotational gem in Pat Beverely, and loads of young talented players who are also tradable pieces. Not to mention they have the cap to add another star.

I also really like Motiejunas, I think he's a more athletic Okur. I don't know why McHale didn't play him in the OKC series, his ability as a stretch 4 would've helped neutralize Ibaka.

I'm very excited about what we can do with our 2 2nd round picks. There are a lot of diamonds in the rough to be had in the 2nd imo and we have a guy who specializes in talent/value.

OT: Harden is the most unclutch star in the NBA right now. Countless times over this season and carrying over from the playoffs last year I've seen him make awful plays during the late stages that greatly influence the decision of the game. He's the 2nd best non-PG penetrator but his jumpshot is sooooooo inconsistent, hell even in the Olympics he could barely buy a bucket. Although i'm sure later down the line he'll develop that consistency and this will all be irrelevent. Point is, Houston has a talented and fun team. People who balked at that Asik contract have nothing to say now.

I really not big with just numbers. Look at Lionel Hollins and it looks he might get pushed out the door because of it. But he is a Great coach. We just need one smart guy making the decisions. God knows we haven't one. Billy King Stefanski. Dileo. Thorn. Collins. 5 retreads. Thorn was the best of all of them.

Very true. Jrue and Thad are the only two keepers. Thad is a 6th man though on a good team.

Good hire by the Sixers. Is it true that Thorn is leaving as well?

And Moultrie a keeper. he produced with the best of them in his limited minutes on the court.

Yea. Thorn is gone, but will remain a "consultant"

I love that it's from completely outside the organization without any ties. That means the new GM is not going to feel pressured to justify keeping players around that he had a part in selecting either via trade, draft, or free agency.

People throw around keeper for Jrue, Thad, whoever... Umm no. They are the two most valuable pieces on the Sixers, but they're not keepers. A keeper is a stud superstar.

If you can use either to acquire or position the team to acquire a superstar and get to the next level then you do it.

The rockets were one of the few teams that use the d league alot.
Should be interesting to see if we do the same having our own team there now.

Getting a super-smart "numbers" guy is exactly what this putrid franchise desperately needs. It's been run for too long by morons and old-school dinosaurs who have no clue how to win in the present day. I'm thinking this guy will be smart enough to tank, acquire assets and try to land a superstar instead of being content to strive for mediocrity and short-term fixes, the kind which have gotten us nowhere for a decade.
