I think the idea of building a winning team is to have players that fully understand their role in the scheme of things. Hollis Thompson does a great job at understanding his role from what i've seen. It's obvious that if he makes it in the NBA it's as a 3 and D type of player and he's fine with that role. He was one of the best perimeter shooters during his time in college and it's starting to carry over to the NBA. His ability to catch and shoot looks to be his biggest strength. I can really see him becoming that Danny Green type of player for us as I mentioned earlier. The corner three could become his sweet spot. From what i've read and see he seems to position himself for the ball well on offense, he's got good balance, and can get low and actually can hit a shot off the dribble. Still though...defensively is where we really need him to earn his paycheck for us. He seems to be decent moving on defense from what i've seen and hopefully he can figure out a way to maximize his height and length in that area. I'm really just starting to warm up to him so I am going to focus more on him as the season progresses. Not saying he's Bruce Bowen but he certainly already has the value of other guys in the league that I really like at that position like Danny Green, Tony Snell, and Khris Middleton.

Agreed. The Spurs model was to have 3 stars with a bevy of role players to support them. The Sixers, as a big market team with billionaire ownership, could try and get 4 stars(hopefully homegrown picks MCW/Noel + 2014 picks) and fill the rest with smart tough athletic role players willing to hustle, defend, space the court and run the floor. Thompson could be a potential candidate for that.

Glad there's a thread on this. I see Thompson learning how to cut to the basket, becoming a semi-reliable outside shooter, becoming a guy who can rebound the ball a bit, etc. For a guy who made the team as an undrafted FA, he's starting to resemble a legitimate NBA role player. I've heard people go out of their way to praise his work ethic and I have to admit I'm rooting for the kid.

I would welcome Meeks back right now if he were available.

Yeah Meeks got a bad rap while he was here but I thought he was a nice piece to this team. He was just asked to do too much.

I think he'll end up being a very nice role player in the league, of course probably not with the Sixers.

I wonder if Thompson will make the rookie-sophomore game.

He didn't make it of course because he's not a big time name, Wroten didn't make it either

Since March 14, Thompson is 18/32 from 3 (56%). Small sample size, but worth noting
I speak the truth.

What's up with all the threads dedicated to single-digit PER guys around here lately? These are bad basketball players. Hollis Thompson is still on the roster because he can hit threes and is a good kid. But as soon as we actually want to add talent, guys like him are gone.

Henry Sims was a gem, though. Elliot Williams and Hollis Thompson are awful.

you think Henry Sims is a "gem" but you hate Hollis Thompson? Thompson has been decent.

They are about equal if you ask me. The real garbage on this team will be dumped in the offseason. Varnado, Mullens, Anderson, Moultrie, Davies.

I don't hate Hollis, I just think he's having an awful season.

Henry Sims is averaging 11 and 7 on a 17.2 PER.

Hollis is shooting 40% from beyond but making less than 1 three a game. He's putting up a pathetic 9.7 PER.

They're not equal. Henry has been much much much better (in smaller sample space, granted).

Agree with Kobble.

Thompson shoots a high %, but he's not a volume shooter. Maybe he will get more assertive as he continues to develop and gain confidence, but outside of knocking down an occasional open 3, he's pretty average or below average in terms of doing anything else.

Sims has been MUCH more impressive.

Varnado is worth keeping around...his shot blocking is a legitimate asset to have off the bench in a big man, and is something harder to find than a player like Thompson.

Hes averaging almost 1.5 BPG in 14 MPG, and while a 13.3 PER isn't anything to write home about, its certainly decent for a deep bench big.

Thompson has shot 41 % from 3 for the season and has potential on defense. Not awful. We knew a lot of players weren't going to produce right away, they're here for the future. When we are a winning team none of Sims, Thompson or Williams might even be here but they're the best prospects we have rght now outside of MCW, Noel and Wroten so I see nothing wrong with tracking their progress.

That's nice that he's hitting 40% of the small amount of threes he has taken. But he's a single-digit PER player. That's beyond awful. That's out of the league awful.

Thompson is not here for the future, he's here to fill out a roster spot.

Don't lump Sims in with the other single-digit PER guys. Sims has played well enough to warrant tracking his progress and think about adding him as a complimentary piece to our actual talent going forward.
