Great signing! There are role players and there are role players that actually make a difference. CM is one of those guys. Our roster is becoming excellent. And we're clearly going with 4 small 1 big lineups. No more traditional PFs.

It's his toughness more than his skillet but he doesn't have any glaring weaknesses and is a nice fit between Maxey and PG. Underrated ball handler that can get to the hoop, switchable defender that won't get overwhelmed physically or athletically. Can guard all 4 Celtics straight up which is a plus.

Another outstanding signing by Morey, and only had to get rid of Reed, really?
He will be a great role player for this team that can do the little things. We lost Melton, but he more than makes up for it as he's not a midget and fits better with Maxey.
Can't believe I see the day when we have 3 good wing players to go with Maxey and Jojo.

Yeah, and also stayed out of hard cap issues and could leave us beneath the 1st apron (if we want to stay there). Costs about half of what DFS would and also doesn't cost us any picks, so it's a great piece of business in that regard. Even if DFS was possibly a better all-around fit.
I also expect him to be tradeable at almost any point, it's a small annual figure that he should hold value even if he's playing kinda meh. So we lose the Reed contract but gain one for an actually desire-able player at a similar yearly price.

If you're obsessive like me, I find it's best to look at these 'all possession' videos to get a sense of how a new player actually plays. Much more telling than highlight videos, but also not super long or involved (like clicking through every play on nba.com can be). They're auto-generated and have some annoying quirks, and it tends to be spotty how many they have available on YT, but most players have a decent enough amount.

Really? I was sad every time I saw come into to the game. BBIQ if about 10. Nice kid but my gosh he is horrible.
He ran around like a decapitated chicken, you were never sure what he was doing or where he was going.
Drummond is not the most skilled big in the league but at least we won't be bullied anymore on the boards and he can give some presence inside.

Of course, the bottom-feeding filth that lives on the GB is trashing this move. All good man. Caleb Martin was one of the remaining names in free agency that I was really hoping we would make a move for. I had high hopes for Paul Reed and I'm sad that he's gone, but it had to be done. As much as I can argue it, I don't think his shot was ever going to improve. Hopefully, he catches on with another team. Maybe Utah will finally snatch him up? I'm sure someone will.
The thing I like about Martin is that he's versatile as a defender and he's not afraid of the big moments. We've changed our identity this offseason by adding guys who aren't afraid to take a big shot when it needs to be made AND made! Adding Gordon, George, Martin and drafting McCain has fixed all of that. We now have some big-time shot makers on this team to go with Maxey and Embiid. Kelly Oubre is also fearless and fearless should probably be the motto of this team. No more soft-ass charmin babies on this roster. No more business decision-making players, no more guys afraid to take a charge. I really like how the identity of this team is shaping up. We have an abundance of capable wings now...A superfluity of interchangeable players that can all rotate and guard whoever necessary on defense. Oubre, George, Martin, Council! We will be able to have switchable players at that position for an entire 48 minutes of a game. No more munchkin guards playing out of position! I love this!
How many is that now for us? 10? I assume we're going to carry 13? Or 12 with one inactive? I guess what I'm getting at is are we going to sign anyone else? If so we're looking at vet min contracts.
Maxey/McCain
Martin/Gordon
Oubre/Council
George/Bona (assuming he even makes the roster)
Embiid/Drummond
Looking at that ten right there, I still say we need a stretch 4 in there somehwere. George Niang was very valuable for us at times and we missed him in moments last season. Doug McDermott would be a nice addition for the veteran min. We also probably need a capable point guard to run the second unit. Spencer Dinwiddie is my top choice if he doesn't sign back with Dallas for the 1892th time in his career. Markelle Fultz as crazy as it sounds, would be a great welcome back addition as well.

I think Marcus Morris is a good candidate, as he shares some traits with Paul George, such as size, shooting ability, and some shot creation.
I'm not too concerned about the power forward position. Both Oubre and Paul George have the length to play power forward. One solution is to find an SG/SF player like Reggie Bullock. I also wouldn't mind getting someone like Haywood Highsmith with whatever salary we can offer, or trading for Dorian Finney-Smith.
Right now, I'm at peace after the Caleb Martin signing. I think he filled the biggest gap following our flurry of signings.
If Maxey misses games, we have Eric Gordon.
If Embiid misses games, we have Drummond.
If Paul George misses games, we have Oubre.
If Oubre or Caleb Martin misses games, we have Ricky Council.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

All good points. I'm trying to look even further beyond that. I mentioned team identity in the previous post and that is the biggest change that I've noticed. We now have the prototypical Nick Nurse team. When we hired him, what I envisioned was similar lineups to what he had in Toronto, but the bonus was that we had Joel Embiid on this roster. I think we're damn close to that now.

Some think it's an amazing signing... But only as a means to rip Embiid (what's his excuse now?)

I spend a lot of time on the GB these days, just gotta be real quick and free with the block button. There's a lot of good long-time posters there, plus a lot of international ppl and newer posters who are trying to learn all the info and lingo, and there's a lot of good talk to be had for sure. Just gotta build a wall around the 35% of clowns and not take any bait that gets through it (which they do be layin, all day). I've got like 20 people blocked on the GB.
Also I've sat on this for a few days and watched tape etc, and Martin's sick. He's athletic, energetic, can shoot and dribble and pass and defend. He's not necessarily that efficient and he's going to sometimes muck up an easy play or brick a bunny (like e.g. Melton did) but I feel like I'm gonna love having him around. He's like the anti-Tobias in terms of keeping things moving and playing up to the speed of the game from the wing.

How did he misjudge the market so badly and turn down the Heat offer ? $65 for 5 years vs $32 for 4 years. For a role player that is massive.

They look at what comparable or even worse guys are getting and think they can as well. A few players have fallen in that position this summer... This apron stuff is new and players feel they can opt out and at least receive the ntp MLE from some team and it's just not out there. Not an off season with lots of available money and it seems the middle class value is changing.
I mean some similar guys to Martin or Derrick Jones like DFS are getting 15 million without being super value players that were essentially playoff stars and helped their teams get to the finals in recent years.... And they're in their primes and believe they're close to or nearly as good as Josh Hart who makes 20 million. I was surprised to see DJJ sign quickly for about 10 million and not 13+ at least

Don't think it's the aprons or the current market really, more that like you said Caleb Martin's not a great guy to invest a ton of $ into. He's a 5th starter/solid rotation guy, we're rightfully excited for him given our situation but he's just a 10/4 guy on meh efficiency who's not particularly great at anything. He's going to help a team that already has like 5 good players, but he's not going to change the trajectory of an okay or blah team who needs to add a 3rd or 4th best player and he's not an elite role player either.
I think this type of 'middle class' has always been valued about like this. For the past 5 years there's been like 30-40 guys on maxes, then like 80-90 who make like $13-33m, then like 50 guys who make MLE-ish money ($8-12m). That's about 180-190 guys or 6 per team, and it makes sense as a range for teams to get their top 6 guys together. We can all think of a few examples of stpid overpays for guys as good or worse than Martin, but those are more exceptions to the norm. Martin's probably a little underpaid but he's around where he should be IMO.
(Also when he signed his current deal DFS was viewed as a significantly better defender and shooter than Martin is. DFS was just coming off two seasons of shooting 40% and was a highly valued 3D guy at the time, shine has come off him some in the last couple years).

He and his agent misjudged the market because the teams didn't behave as they had in past off-seasons. They saw 6 different teams with enough Cap space to sign multiple players. They also saw that there were only 3 or 4 players (George, Klay, Derozen and maybe KCP) that should have received significant money. They thought there was more than enough money to get at least a (Mid-level) 13 million per contract, so why not take the chance?
He didn't anticipate that Mom & Pop franchises (Charlotte and Orlando) would just re-sign their own guys and not really use the space. Dumb Franchises (Detroit) would waste their cap space on Tobias Harris and T Hardaway Jr. Or, prudent franchises (San Antonio and Utah) wouldn't sign anybody and just use their cap space to facilitate trades and steal draft picks.
I honestly don't think it was so out of line for Caleb Martin to think he would easily get at least 13 million (Mid-level) on the Open market, in this environment. The teams just didn't operate normally this off-season.
