LOL I see your point and it looks like those trades the Celtics and Lakers use to make in their history that ended up netting them Hall of Fame players. Kareem and Wilt were both actually traded to the Lakers. How in the world does that happen?

They argueably got less than what we got for AI. You would think a young borderline all srtar scenter would have gottent them a lot more. Weren't they talking about getting real talent from the Bulls last year?

Memphis is going to have max cap room this summer. If they can sign Brand or Smith or someone this is absolutely worth it.

Good deal for both sides. Screws up the Sixers though.

Wow that is worse than the Iverson deal the Lakers look sick now when Bynum gets back. Doesn't it suck to watch teams like the Celtics get KG when Iverson wanted him. Then the Lakers get Gasol when we need him. Yet we sit around and look at Reggie Evans type players year after year.

Lets not turn this into a huge Woe is us thread. Other than Memphis being under the cap, there isn't anything that has dramitically changed for us.

We still are building around a young core, desperately need some kind of superstar offensive player, a shooter and a post presence. We still are young and soon to be under the cap. we still won't be peaking until most of the current elite teams are past their primes.

Well Philly has a competition with Memphis right now. I bet the Grizz will follow it up with a trade for another additional cap space.

I think the funniest part of this trade is the Grizzlies got the rights to Pau's younger brother Marc in the deal. Now they can say they were once traded for eachother (sorta).

This looks fixed. The NBA wants the Lakers to meet the Celtics in the finals. Mchale does Ainge a favor and now West ( even tho he isnt with the team he had to have some part in this ) did a favor for the Lakers.

its going to be hard to get more space in Memphis unless they move Mike Miller or young players because they have bad contracts (Collins,Darko,Cardnal and Stoudemire)

i can't imagine mike miller staying if gasol is gone

i feel like some people might be over-reacting to this trade.

ok, so there is another player in the FA market this summer. i would've been surprised if no other team made a move to this effect before the deadline anyway. it's not the end of our chances to acquire a good player.

we're in the BK-era mode, ie "freak out when you dont hold all the cards for the future because the GM is about to screw everything up". relax, it's post-BK, we really don't know what stefanski's capable of but give him a chance to work. (noteworthy: that his sole move thus far has been freeing up cap space).

as far as nba conspiracies go, yea this trade seems really suspicious. but i think it's a testament to how much gasol has fallen out of favor with GMs (and secondarily, how valuable cap space is). i've always felt he's ridiculously over-rated, and the one way i see this trade effecting the sixers is that we don't have to worry about him being shipped here now. (thank god)

Warrick $2,119,102
Lowry $1,163,520

Lakers 1st (ca 20) 957,300
Grizzlies 1st (ca 5) 2,372,800

That would give them roughly 10 million, unless I've missed something. The rumored "Swift for Collins" trade has no effect, as they're both owed $6.2 million for next year.

The good news out of this is two fold.

A) This deal just goes to show that obtaining big name players does not mean breaking the bank. The Grizzlies essentially took cap space, a young player that doesn't address any of their needs, and two first round picks that figure to be in the lower third of the draft. We should be able to offer cap space this summer, along with higher picks (also in back to back years when you factor in Utah's pick), and we have a number of young players on a similar level as Crittenton.

B) Because Memphis now has FOUR young PGs there is now a chance that we can trade for one of them.

The bad news is this...

Because of this deal, we obviously no longer have a chance to obtain Gasol. The other side to this is that we will now have STRONG competition for Amare Stoudemire should Phoenix look to move him. The only advantage that we will have over Memphis this summer is that we are in the East and if Phoenix looks to move him... they probably will want to send him out of the conference.

stat is going nowhere, please dont get your hopes up for this, just wont happen

we said no to KG for stat, so i doubt we would get rid of him for anything
