Just a completely unserious franchise. Grimes is delusional too but I'm so sick of this team's ineptitude.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably

What did you want to have happen? What was your plan here?

I’m actually curious. I’m disappointed too but this isn’t sports talk radio so we don’t just yell our emotions over and over. I do want to know what people thought was the path here—like are folks just saying they think we would’ve been able to sign him for less than what would put us in the 2nd apron? I’m not sure about that factually, I always suspected Grimes wouldn’t take that and wasn’t crazy not to. But I lm wondering if there’s some other perspective if people have this much conviction about it.

Sign him to a 2-4 year deal worth between 15-17m per year. Meeting in the middle for a deal that is fair and makes sense for both parties.
Shams said Grimes agent offered the Sixers a deal at 2 year 17m per season and the Sixers turned it down.
It may be more Joshua Harris, but they also said they let Yabu go so they had extra money to pay Grimes and they lowballed him. So wtf is going on here exactly? It's just utter incompetence across the board and every Sixers fan should be tired of it every year in one form or another. Most(every?) other team in one of these situations ended up figuring it out and getting their players signed. Only the Sixers had their situation end this way.

Morey stressed that signing Grimes was a priority all off-season.

It seems that Grimes may have been unreasonable (hard to tell, but let's go with that). Two things that I would have hoped.HotelVitale wrote:Stanford wrote:HotelVitale wrote:What was your plan here?

Firstly, I wish Morey got an idea what Grimes was looking for when he thinking about trading for him to know if they had a chance to sign him, unless they were just trying to get off Martin.
Secondly, I wish they upped the one year deal a bit more so they could waive the NTC and possibly trade him this season.

I came into this off-season thinking Grimes was worth about what they were offering him. He's unproven in the role he'd need to play for any other team, and other teams didn't go after him that had money in NJ and Detroit, and doesn't seem like he was able to find a trade partner. We don't know all the details, but I gotta trust Shams considering..... If all they offered him was 8.8 million.... That's bad faith.
They still have his bird rights, and they clearly know that's powerful... Along with the ability to control Grimes value...But... They could've offered him a bit more for a 1 year deal.
My main issue is that they took this direction with Grimes while letting Yabu go for nothing. Knicks have Yabu pennies and he would've been very important for this season.

Not sure why anyone would be butt hurt here besides Grimes and his agent.

Just more of the same. Assets wasted little by little until there's nothing left.

Because at the end of the day whether he fits or not at the number he wants is one thing. But he is definitely a talented young player that fits on any team and he's an unrestricted free agent next year that can now veto any trade, so he can leave for nothing. The sixers are far enough under the cap that they could still have given him more and tried to nurture the relationship

Re: Welcome Quentin Grimes!
A complete, utter debacle by fraud Morey...with an assist from Harris.
I mostly blame Morey...if he knows Harris won't go over the luxury tax to give Grimes the one-year balloon payment, then he should have done a sign and trade. this is the worst case scenario...you can't trade Grimes and will lose him for nothing next year.

They surely explored any sign and trade options. Just not sure there's much here with him. That said I like him as a 4th guard on the qo quite a lot.

Re: Welcome Quentin Grimes!
I’m totally fine with lowballing Grimes - he’s never had a sizeable role on a winning team and overpaying based on a good couple months during tanking time doesn’t make sense. But letting Yabu walk while also lowballing Grimes feels like a major disconnect in the offseason strategy. Idk what our internal politics look like, I’m more inclined to blame Harris because these types of shenanigans predate Morey.

Re: Welcome Quentin Grimes!
We get him at a low price in a contract year. He'll play great for us! Or he won't play much for us, in which case it's good that we aren't paying him very much.

They didn't have Bird rights on Yabu, and so re-signing him would've required using the MLE, and if you use more than the TMLE it triggers a 1st apron hard cap.
As for Grimes... once they didn't trade back and took Edgecombe, he became extraneous. Then he asked for an exorbitant salary, and combined with the uncertainty around Joel and PG, that killed any idea of a long term deal here.

[Charania] The Sixers' first formal proposal of the offseason came on Sept. 24 with a four-year, $39 million offer. Days later, Grimes was offered a one-year, $8.8 million deal that gave him $100,000 more than his qualifying offer in order to waive an inherent no-trade clause.
Pitiful. They wanted him to take the QO. Says even more that they didn't try to re-sign Yabu when this was the offer they were putting out there.
Agreed, they did want him to take the QO.
What it says is volumes about where ownership thinks the team is. They don't think they're going to be good this year.

Re: Welcome Quentin Grimes!
its not about Grimes the player really
just the constant poor roster management that has killed us for decades lol. We either overpay old scrubs or let at the very least solid players walk for nothing. I don't know if Grimes is that good, I don't know if Yabu would hold up in the playoffs and obviously I don't know what deals really were offered but again it just feels like we are always on the back foot with these things and its always "well we had our hands tied doe". Like I have said before just a baffling lack of creativity in general...
and it has been constant since **** Iverson lol.
