They've been terrible since they got rid of Lou Williams. It's not recency bias, it's watching them play. They are awful. They have no good players, they are poorly coached, and have all the motivation in the world to lose games.
Yeah, that team is really broken now and should be a clear favorite for the #2. Watch a few minutes of them and you'll see--the defense is abysmal and the half-court offense is basically a lot of dribbling to get a long 2 or a weird flip in the lane.
We should also remember that even terrible teams pull of wins sometimes--we should know that more than anyone else!--and that wins are easier to come by in the last 2-3 weeks when teams are resting/tanking/etc. But that advantage goes for all teams, and I definitely see no reason we should think the Suns (who easily have both more talent and experience) are going to lose 2 games more than the Lakers the rest of the season.
