You can tell he has put a emphasis on moving the ball out of the post. If he continues this will only get better for him and a huge plus for the team moving forward.

Im a little concerned by his declining rim protection, defense in the PnR amd overall defensive effort.

Still he's our only championship calibeer player. He just needs a team who fits him better.

I’m not concern about his defense. Sure I think the he’s sagging a little bit way too much In the paint and giving up a ton of 6-8 foot floaters which are going in at a high percentage rate for opposing teams. But what else can you do? Teams don’t want to give up the open 3 pointer so staying out guarding the 3 line. A team like the Atlanta hawks kills the sixes on these short range floaters in the mid paint.

So if Embiid steps up to defend the shot, it leaves the paint wide open for an even easier layup or Embiid is at risk for making dumb fouls 7-8 week from the basket. You just have to pick your options.

We do not have good rotating defense players. And that’s the main crux of the sixers defense. It’s built for one on one defense but not for rotation defense.

Embiid's PPP on post ups by year:
17/18 - .97
18/19 - 1.05
19/20 - 1.12

Turnover% has dropped every year, free throw rate and fg% has gone up every year

What the Sixers lack is these long mobile forwards that can play the passing lines, recover to guard the 3 point line and provide additional rim protection. They are also not switching in defense so there ways for the other teams to create shots by spamming pnr. Beyond that even the personnel is a bit overrated defensively. Harris is not a contributor, Horford is declining, Richardson plays hard and tries but i dont think he has that much impact. Simmons is a very good on ball defender but his team defense at the same level. Embiid has also weaknesses, like defending pnr and is asked too much as the only rim protection on team. And then you have all the other guys that range from negative to zero.

I agree, still like you said, i think hes a little bit lazy sometimes and swags off way too much. I just hope it doesn't become a bad habit. He should tune up his defensive effort in the Playoffs.

Also agree that we are overated defenseviely, particulary our help defense is pretty bad. Thats why Thybulle is the other player i would try to keep around for the next season.

Embiid is averaging 32.7 and 13.3 on 65.8 TS% in 32.7 mpg in the bubble so far...

I'm so proud of him right now hahaha! I'd rather it be 2/2 with Ben, and I feel like he might actually be trying, given that he took a 3 point shot today. I'm just hoping Ben is saving himself for the playoffs and we'll see him fully unleashed. Day to day though, so we all know what that means.

im not sure you can say his rim protection is declining, today was the only time you have ever seen him give up a few layups in a row (in the first quarter prob not going full bore) but at the end of the game he was swarming all over the place.

in terms of PNR defense the last two years it is the scheme. We hedge a screen once about every 10 games and have the C step up on those guys even less. The philosophy is sound to give up mid range jumpers but the problem is never showing a different look. Every possession is the same on defense:

1.) offense sets PNR at 3 point line

2.) we go over the screen regardless of the offensive player, the defensive player, or the personnel on the floor

3.) defender dies on the screen or chases from behind off of the three point line

4.) offensive player drives to the free throw line for wide open shot while the center plays the paint

It is why every guard ever that can hit those shots scores 30 on us. Cov used to be the guy that was fighting over all those screens and he is one of the best in the league at doing that. Right now we have jrich, shake, burks, neto, and furkan dying on those screens instead. I hope we switch it up some in the playoffs but i have lost all faith in brett.

edit - we also rarely switch anymore in these situations which seems to be another over correction due to the celtics series two years ago

Embiid's conditioning and passing out of the post are surprisingly good. He is probably nearing the point of getting sick of losing. We will see how he fairs against better defenses in the playoffs and how long he can keep it up.

Still people might want to give Brown some compliments for this improvement as the team seems to generate good looks out of the double teams.

People had concerns about this last year too, and then they played two teams in the Nets and Raptors with shot creating guards and it was largely a non-issue. You just don't win playoff series having guards taking mid range jumpers. If someone gets hot for a night (like Game 1 of the Brooklyn series) you live with it because long term the math should work out in your favor.

JRich and Thybulle are both very good defensive guards and Simmons can cover everyone so I'm not sure why we're acting like those other names you listed are the ones in charge of that or if all of them are even going to play. You had Redick playing the whole game last year and they figured out ways to avoid him getting attacked.

Yeah, in general, it's an effective strategy that leads to low efficiency offense. It still drives me crazy when a guy is on fire and you continuously let him walk into a wide open jumper. When you've got a hot shooter that knows he can get that shot whenever he wants I think that changes the math a bit on a game to game basis.

Yeah also i get the strategy and long term view. But for example against SA, in the last minutes, with the game on the line, we were giving wide open 4-5 ft shots to an especialist like Demarr Derozan or Rudy Gay. That can´t be a good strategy.

We all knew this, just sucks to hear it. They've gotten rid of all of the people that Joel is closest to, consistently, for the last 2+ seasons. Time to strip this down to the studs sans Embiid and Simmons.

Both Jimmy and Joel have now admitted their frustration with our front office and coaching staff on JJ's show.

Ill always be a fan, but what a sh*t organization.
