Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
Remember McCain is doing this as a one and done freshman, not a college vet. This is honestly nuts and indicates a ceiling far beyond what was ever imagined. I recall reading some scouting reports after the draft from some guys who thought he was the most Curry-like player in the draft since him. Seemed crazy and I don't even think I read them after a couple sentences because of hyperbole.
Also, I think his athleticism is very underrated. Jumping like Morant or being as fast with the ball like Maxey is easy to observe and say that's athletic (and it is) but I don't think you can consistently rebound at his size without being athletic.
I don't think he can be a top 15 player in the league because of his length but I think he can very much be in that next tier (where Maxey falls too).

The real test will be if this team can ever start winning can he perform at the same level when opposing coach game plan for him? I hope he can.
Was just about to post the same thing. McCain's run has come out of the blue and been completely unexpected, but now the secret is out and teams are going to start watching film on him and scheming for him. He looks like he's for real, but the acid tests will be coming up.
Didn't Magic have their best defender Suggs on him? Seems like teams know that we're undermanned and that he's been a big part of our offense.
True and Suggs got him to foul out.
You want it to be one way....but it's the other way. (Marlo)

Sure he would've gone top 10 if there was a belief he could really become a point guard instead of a small 2 guard as Duke played him

If Maxey hadn't gotten injured, McCain wouldn't be getting these opportunities, which means we might still be thinking of him as a throw-in on a trade this year. in that sense Maxey's injury might have prevented a disaster. (Trying to find some silver linings to this season's horrible begining.)

I would trade Maxey before this guy. He’s gonna be a lot more efficient than Tyrese.

Definitely a silver lining so far. Maxey was out there needing help offensively, while Jared was over on the bench watching, understandably to some degree (maybe not fully considering they couldn't score).
The biggest issue that I have with Nick Nurse so far and his tenure is how he doesn't adjust well when Joel and other star power is out. He continues to try to focus on a defense that's not good, instead of playing with pace pace pace and trying to play to Maxeys strength and a style that most less talented offensive players could thrive in. Whether that's Buddy Hield, Tobias, Oubre, etc. It's not going to be perfect but I think they would win more games than they do with the style that he always reverts to which is a horrible horrible offense.
All that to say, considering what we heard about Jared in training camp, the idea that they wanted to build his value for a throw in to a trade possibly, or maybe just develop him.... the lack of attempts to try him out when half the team was out to start the year goes to show Nurse philosophy and the detriment of it. Leave your system behind and let them go out and play fast and free

This season hasn't gone the way we envisioned, but we can take solace in the fact that we landed another guy that combines talent+vibes.
Maxey and McCain will be a part of something special in Philly. Whether or not it's part of the Embiid/George iteration or their own iteration 5 years from now is still up in the air.

No offense but what’s up with the blind optimism? I’m super pumped we gave ourselves a lifeline too in hitting on McCain too. It’s awesome. But if the wheels fall off with our Embiid/PG tied into long term contracts what special things are going to happen?
And when they leave, what is going to stop Maxey and McCain from being what other promising teams do all the time - a couple of very talented young players with positive production but no real success without a bonafide top ~6 player.

If the wheels fall off we get Flagg or Bailey to complete our new Big 3 with Maxey and McCain. This can literally be a 1-year rebuild if they properly tank this year.

We aren’t going to tank. We are going to be competing for the playoffs at all costs. This organization would not accept the optics of a tank year after what went into it, with Embiid nearing the end of his career. Get real.
Even at this point, with how bad the East is we could easily still make a 5 seed and lose in the first round as per our regular annual routine.
The fact we look this horrible is an impressive feat, but there is no way we stay this way. Our recalibrated expectations should probably be a play-in appearance.

Not by playing alongside each other as starters in the backcourt. One would need to come off the bench to be successful if matchup is important to you instead of just scoring all the time with no ability to defend tall players as neither can stop Bane from having a field day last night.Kobblehead wrote:This season hasn't gone the way we envisioned, but we can take solace in the fact that we landed another guy that combines talent+vibes.

When Maxey started, we should have moved Oubre Jr at 6'8 at the 2 to defend Bane while McCain comes off the bench for that spark we need instead of sharing baskets with the Big 3. That's why we lost to a team we should have beaten without Ja.

As someone from Toronto I saw Nurse do this plenty with players on the Raptors. He’ll fight tooth and nail to get as many wins his way as possible even at the expense of what’s best for the organization or the development of it’s players. It always felt like he was more concerned with his resume than anything.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
If you told me in September that McCain would play his way into the starting lineup and Yabu would shoot 40%+ from 3, I'd have thought the team would be a strong contender. And yet...2-12. What a world.
Anyways, McCain is awesome and gives me a reason to tune in every game.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
Been paying a lot of attention to McCain this year and I must say, he reminds me a lot of a young Steph. I say this as someone who has been following Steph Curry not to long after he was drafted. His off-ball movement is easily the most identical not to mention his jump-shot is absolutely bonkers. Philly has a future superstar on their hands who'd I'd argue should be prioritized over Embiid.
Sounds crazy to say right now but I remember saying the same thing about Steph right before they traded Ellis. Not to mention Maxey isn't a slouch either. That backcourt will be lethal for years to come if surrounded with the right pieces.

The scariest question in NBA history.
"Can Stephen Curry get better?"

From the outside looking in who seems to have the higher ceiling between Maxey and Mccain?
