Russell is a better shooter as a freshman in college than Evan Turner is now after 5+ years in the NBA.

Sophmore season...... Promise me both Russell and Mudiay will be better than this former number 2 pick.
Ha, I don't think anyone can promise you anything. It's impossible to know how talent will perform at the next level. I can promise you that if we get the 2nd pick, people around here are gonna feel real uncomfortable about taking a hyped combo guard out of Ohio State, even if just for superstition. I can also tell you that ET had a fugly looking jumpshot coming out of college and was never a spot up shooter who could space the floor. Russell's jump shot is saucy and that makes a whole lot of difference.
The Sixers have taken so many players who would be amazing if they could shoot from outside, but could never learn to shoot from outside (I'm becoming convinced that only a special few players learn to shoot once they're in the pros). I'm ready to take a guy who already has his shot down. I want us take Russell. I'm probably a little too jacked up right now, but I'd consider taking him at #2.
I hope you guys are right, I'd hate to see Russell taken before Towns and we rehash 2010.

While I knew Russell would win this poll pretty easily, I didn't think it'd be this drastic. Guess people are that sick of being a **** shooting team.

Re: Poll: D'Angelo Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay?
Its a toss up for me. You can make an argument for any of the guys really (some stronger than the others). Russell is a shooter...we still need those. If he can actually play PG, then its a no brainer. Mudiay has the size, I feel our defense is missing and if he can get to the hole and Brown feels like he can fix his shot...then why not? Okafor is just the best player available (I'd put Towns above him but eh) and you gotta wonder how much of his awful defense just effort...maybe that can be coached up? Towns is just a big ass toolbox. woooo.
For us as a pure fit its Towns>Russell>Mudiay>Okafor....but I understand other orders too (before I get shanked...I have Okafor as my 4 because I really really really want a PG lol...I'd take him over the PGs but I don't know if that mixture of bigs works whereas Towns and Embiid both have some midrange to make it work. Okafor is a pure post guy right now...a great one but yeah).
Its early tho. Workouts will be very important for the Pgs

Re: Poll: D'Angelo Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay?
I say Russell if I had to pick one of the 2. However, I'd strongly consider both Okafor and KAT, regardless of the "fit" next to Embiid/Noel. I still think you go BPA in the draft and figure it out later.
But yeah, given a choice between the 2, I pick Russell. And then I'd try to go get a guard who can defend, handle the ball well, and is a spot up shooter to put next to Russell. And an athletic 3 and D guy at SF.

Turner over his 3 years in college shot 36% from 3 but on right around 1.5 attempts per game. Russell is currently averaging 6.4 attempts per game. He's already taken 43 more 3s in this season than Turner took in all 3 years combined so the sample size is already better let alone the likelihood that if Turner took such a small number despite being ball dominant I'm willing to bet he took most of his wide open.
The feedback I've received from our fans is they understand we are trying to build something great. Good decisions come from having a broad set of options and making tough calls. We will do it unblinkingly. We have to be willing to take smart risks-Hinkie

Russell is that guy for us he can play both positions seamlessly . Efficient 18-25 points with some dimes is what I see his potential as. I see Brandon Roy with a more potent 3 pt shot. We need a big time scorer on the perimeter and he oozes big time potential for the nba. I have KAT and Russell as Hinkies main targets in this draft lottery.

Evan Turner also had a broken shot with unorthodox and flawed mechanics...and despite those %'s didn't take a ton of 3's either.
Russell has the tools to be a Lillard/Curry/Harden esque scoring combo guard with playmaking skills to run a offense.

Better as in 11/25 from three for the entire season? Russell has made 5 or 6 threes in multiple games this season.

Russell-Embiid pick and pop would be difficult to stop. Pretty similar to Lilliard-Aldridge.
Russell's passing ability would also help Noel who is pretty good in rolling off PnRs (quicker than most defenders).
For now, I'm staying away from the draft since everything is still a crapshoot until all infos are gathered and I don't want to be disappointed in the event of a bad lottery outcome.

Re: Poll: D'Angelo Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay?
- Larry Brown on Mudiay-Russell comparisonAnd how does he compare to his main competition, D'Angelo Russell? Slightly more than half of the NBA scouts and execs I spoke with had Mudiay ranked ahead of Russell as the top guard prospect in the draft. It's basically 50/50 right now, but Brown doesn't see it that way at all.
"They aren't at all the same," Brown said. "Russell's a better shooter. He sees the floor, but he's not a point guard. He's just a basketball player. I don't think you want him bringing up the ball or initiating the offense. I don't know [if] he could guard the point. He hasn't had to guard point guards. Defense is such an underrated thing for these young guards. If you can't guard pick-and-rolls, it breaks everything. I used to tell Mudiay every day, 'You are going to have guard Russell Westbrook one night and then Derrick Rose the next night. It never stops.' I used to tease him about that. Point guard is the premier position in the NBA these days. You have to get it done on both ends of the floor."
Chad's ford selling point for Mudiay to go no.1 is basically Mudiay has shown good workethic while hanging around out of NBA guys that makes him realize he is special, while they say his game has progress as the CBA season went. Then it ended up with LB going to teach Mudiay after his CBA stint with LB saying.. "I'm going to make him special."

Re: Poll: D'Angelo Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay?
I have been wavering between these two guys for a while now. I voted for Russell when the thread was posted, but now would change my vote to Mudiay if I could. That's how I feel at the moment at least.
I think that Mudiay has two important advantages over Russell.
1. He is a better athlete, with more defensive potential. They both have great size for the position, but Mudiay is at least a notch better athletically. He may not be John Wall, but he is right below him. Maybe he is a 9 out of 10 where as Russell is a 7.5 or 8 out of ten. You can't teach athleticism.
2. Also, I just don't think that Russell is a point guard. He is a shooting guard that has the skills to play the point, but I don't think that he is a natural point. Mudiay is more like a point guard with good scoring potential.
I think that Russell's advantage is shooting which Mudiay can improve over time. I don't think that Russell can improve his athleticism or change the fact that he isn't a natural point.
I like Mudiay's potential on the PnR more, and he will be better at penetrating.
If we are going to have a dominate big man (Embiid), and surround him with shooters, then we need someone who can really run the team at the point, and I feel as if Mudiay will be better at that.
Now if we already had a high level point guard and were looking to play one of these guys off the ball then I would go with Russell all day. I think that they are comparable talents, but that Mudiay would be better for us. I'll certainly take either of them though.
I have just changed my rankings of the top 4 over the last month from 1. Okafor, 2. Towns, 3. Russell, 4. Mudiay to 1. Towns, 2. Okafor, 3. Mudiay, 4. Russell.

Mudiay is a hell of a lot more Athletic then Russell is. Just wait and see come combine time. He will likely surpass both Rose and Wall's athletic testing numbers. However, his shooting makes MCW look like Larry Bird...serious. Russell is a nice player. But he does not make his team better. In fact a nationally ranked Ohio State team heading into this season has drastically underperformed...mostly due to Russell's play late in games against the better teams. If any Guard out there has played well and helped carry his team to national recognition it's Notre Dame's Jerian Grant.

So what about athleticism? Is Steph Curry super athletic? Nope. But he can shoot the lights out.
Can Mudiay really improve his shooting over time? How many players are success stories in that department?
While Russell may lack athleticism, and may not be a pure PG, why can't he be a SG with handles? Why can't you pair him next to a pure PG who can defend and hit an open shot, and make it work?
